I feel bridge mode is better for things like parental control and pppoe is better for sharing the connection between multiple systems. Also many people who use BB are not familiar with options like auto update which is nowadays very common with many OS and other software. Even without knowledge the auto update will be in the background and people caught unaware until receive the bill.

you are right that why i am saying that bridge mode is better .

only out of 100% , 20% share their connection. and in bridge mode no port forward problem

Bridged mode for users who are looking forward for simple functionality

PPPoE mode for power uses who really know how to tamper with their modem!! Lots of additonal functionality can be invoked while in pppoe mode.

For people with Unlimited Plan, pppoe is much more useful. I have Home 500 C+, so I am using bridge mode. It's easier to reset/disconnect IP when using NU feature.

    In pppoe mode..

    1. Need to switch off & on the modem to reset the IP, which will take more than a minute.
    2. Need to port-forward for Bit-torrent to work properly.

    In bridge mode..

    1. Only need to disconnect & reconnect the connection, which only take less than 3 seconds.
    2. No need to port-forward.

For people with UnLimited plan, it's a hassle to disconnect and reconnect the connection every time. And not much difference in bit-torrent speed if you Port-forward in UnLimited plans. So pppoe mode is best for UnLimited data plan users and bridge mode for Limited data plan users (especially Night Unlimited users).

PS. Bridge mode is not safe unless you have a good firewall software.

    @archer
I am not joining this thread,
because of contest and add to the spam.
All modem designers ( Dlink/Liksys/Cisco/Buffalo/netgear/Huawei/Utstar/ etc ) should take the
advice given here to give only "Bridged" DMZ option.
    The END.

    b) Only need to disconnect & reconnect the modem, which only take less than 3 seconds.

Both are the same!! I think the second point should be Only need to disconnect & reconnect the connection, which only take less than 3 seconds.

It is not a question of port-forwarding or quick connection, etc. The main challenge is multiple connections or multiuse.

If you have two or more machines to connect to broadband then PPPoE is the best option. On the other hand if you have only one machine to connect to BB, it does not really matter.

Bridge mode does offer the advantages of no port-forwarding and when you disonnect, there is no internet traffic even if the modem is switched on. But PPPoE offers more flexibility and independence from dialing. Also if you suffer from disconnections, from time to time (but not too frequent), the bridge mode will immediately pop-up the dialer which could be irritating. The PPPoE mode will quietly dial in the background.

Finally, in case of newbies using Linux, PPPoE will be easier to configure. Although I must admit that 'newbies' and 'Linux' is a contradiction by itself.

I really can't choose. I personally use PPPoE because I have a desktop, laptop and sometimes my Wi-Fi enabled O2 XDA IIi to connect to internet.

So I will vote for PPPoE - but only because I use it that way.

Bridge mode is good only in one situation -
When u are on a volume/time based limited plan and using only one node (PC/Laptop) to access the net.

For all other situations, PPPoE is the preferred alternative as it gives far more flexibility to your connection.

I have voted for both. Because i have tamed both the scenarios. All these years i was in bridged mode since 2005. But now i am sharing my connection between three PCs at my place. Hence i found pppoe mode to be better. And guess what? I am doing everything like night time downloading automatically. The router is pre-programmed to reboot at 2:05am and then at 7:55am.

Depending upon the need at hand pppoe or bridge mode rules !!

I prefer bridge mode coz first of all PPPoE mode is not working for me.

And 2nd bridge mode gives more control over connecting/disconnection without powering off the modem.

But for linux i'd like to use PPPoE to put away all the hassles..

In Ubuntu (Linux) latest version, it's just as easy as creating bridge mode connection in Windows.

    Reset the modem/router
    Access modem/router settings page
And configure the modem/router in bridge mode just like in Windows.

Creating connection after setting modem/router in Bride mode...

    In Ubuntu 8.10

System -> Preference -> Network Configuration -> DSL -> Add

    1. Input connection name
    2. Input username
    3. Input password
    4. Click OK
Click the tray icon and select the connection name to connect.

    In Windows XP

Start -> Program -> Accessories -> Communications -> New Connection Wizard

    1. Select Connect to the Internet
    2. Select Set up my connection manually
    3. Select Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password
    4. Input ISP/Connection Name
    5. Input Username & Password
    6. Click Finish
Double click the icon and click dial to connect.

I have a limited plan, but I am on PPPoE.
Is there any difference in bytes upload/download in case of Bridged or PPPoE??
Is PPPoE consumes more data even when my lappy is switched off?
