Default Setting up Wireless LAN in Bridge mode

    Hi,

I have recently got BSNL unlimited plan.

    I have a desktop[wired] and a laptop[for Wi-fi].

In PPPoE mode, I am able to browse internet on both desktop and laptop. no issues there. but the disadvantage I feel is that my username and pswd are stored on modem, which i am not confortable with. Anyhow, PPPoE works fine for just browsing. Also, IP addresses are assigned automatically.

But I need to connect to my office VPN, which supports Bridge mode.

So, After I switch my modem from PPPoE to Bridge mode, my laptop stops getting the internet.

I have assigned the IP addresses and DNS server details manually to both desktop and Laptop.

In the desktop, I have created a new connection, mentioning my username and pswd, which is working fine and I am able to get the internet.

But in laptop, though I am able ping both the modem [192.168.1.1] and as well as the desktop, I am not getting the internet.
This is understandable as I have to provide my Username and Password before I can connect. I cannot do it in the same way as i did on my desktop by creating a new connection...

I also filled my desktop's IP address as the default gateway for my laptop in TCP/IP settings in Wireless connection... But that is also not working !

Can you please suggest, how to get the internet on my laptop when my modem is in Bridge mode.

    Thanks in advance.

in PPPoE mode, the user authentiction is initiated at the Modem/Router level. so beyond that, u can connect any number of nodes but for the DSLAM server, it remains only 1 user (the modem).
in brige mode, the authentication is initiated at the node (PC/Laptop) level. so only one node can be active at one time.
So if u need to use ur laptop in bridge mode, connect from the laptop only and disconnect the PC.
if u want to share the connection using bidge mode, u need to designate one of the two nodes as primary. connect using bridge mode. then create an adhoc pc-pc connection between the two with the option to share the internet connection of the primary system

    Thank you for your inputs.

You are absolutely right regding the PPPoE and Bridge modes.

Yes, I need to share the internet between both desktop and Laptop.
my question was really what you have suggested. Could you please let me know in detail as to how can i make one node Primary ? and how to make adhoc pc-pc connection ?

    Pls Suggest.

since your laptop already has wifi, the simplest way is to get a usb wifi dongle (costs 800-1000) for your PC and then create a wifi etwork between the two with the option to share the internet connection. Please also make sure that u take necessary security precautions regarding wifi network.
then connect in bridge mode from ur PC.

So, there is no other way but to get additional hardware and set up adhoc connection ?

Is there no other way as to just play with IP settings and get it done ?

not to my knowledge. there's the option of using a cross-over cable. but that is also additional hardware.

U can share the internet connection in both the PCs by using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). But for this method to work u need to configure one pc as server and other as client. The server needs to be always online for the client to access the net. It is generally not implemented, but configuring the modem in pppoe mode is always desired and implemented as the modem need to be on at all times.

I can buy a network cable and connect my laptop directly to my modem, as it supports max 4 parallel ethernet connections. Its not a problem in that case.

I am having trouble setting up wireless part.

I'll keep your suggestion in mind though.

    Thank you.

    u r welcome.
but the moment u set up parallel ethernet connections, u will end up with the original problem that either u need to connect to PPPoE mode or in bridge mode from only one node (PC/Laptop) at any given point of time.

I thnk in Bridge or even in PPPoE mode, Wired connections wont cause any problem. the 2 systems can access internet independently.
Only thing is that for my office VPN, i need to be in bridge mode.

What i will do is, try to set up parallel ethernet connections and check how things work. Probably that will clear our doubts... and then will resume the Wireless setup issue !

i dont get it.. why do you HAVE to be in bridged mode for VPN??it should work in ppoe mode.. although yes a specific dialer is required for VPN.. but you could have your bsnl in ppoe mode at that time..
