how much did you pay for your switch?? switches costing like 500-600rs arent quite switches they are like hubs.. switches are more intelligent compared to hubs..

    HowStuffWorks "Search"

You get lot of articles in this web site.
    Select your topic.
Too much theory to explain about switches/hubs/routers etc.

I think Superprash is right. You must be having a hub. A switch is quite expensive and not even necessary for a home network.

Without getting into technical details of a hub (switch), to explain in common layman's terms, a hub is very much like a electric multi-socket extender.

The internet speed will be divided amongst all computers connected concurrently. But it is not an even distribution. The reported speed may be 1 mbps but in reality could be much less or more also. It all depends upon the network activity.

ahamad.v is my friend and its purpose to ask this question is that he want to know that if we can connect 4 PCS in lane to a switch
whether we get speed of 1mbps in all pcs ,if we get then how it(switch) works

i already told him that speed will divided by 4 if we are having 4pcs connected in lan and we are having 2mbps plan.
    so please explain ?????

as just4kix said, when sharing a connection using hub(switch) the speed gets divided among the nodes(computers in a start topology in this case). you wont get maximum speed at all nodes simultaneously. speed distribution depends on a lot of factors. suppose one of the pcs is downloading a torrent from a private tracker having many number of seeds and another one is downloading from a public tracker having lesser number of seeds ... the first one is likely to attain maximum of the bandwidth ... this distribution depends on network semantics.

Switches and Hubs are different devices

Intelligent management of the bandwidth can be done in switches

Hubs just transfer the available bandwidth to all the ports
