    Default Suggest Router!! Urgently

Hi all. Now I am very excited coz I have finally received the call from BSNL for their dataone connection. Now they are asking me as to whether I want the router from them or should I buy it from elsewhere. He said that he will be giving a router from Pronet brand. He said that there will be just 1 port on it for Internet. I also have an active cable internet connection. I would like to have both the connection active. Will another ADSL2+ router give me more ports and will I be able to run both connections successfully. Please give me suggestions of some routers and also do it fast as I have to reply it to the BSNL man. I know some modems like D-link 802c and netgear D11(not sure of exact name). So plz help me out...Waiting for your inputs...

    Urgent reply:
    1.Probably PN-ADSL 101E/U - ADSL 2+ Router
Not recommended if you use laptop/ additional desktops/ now or later.

2.Your cable ISP modem ( if supplied)
to be used along with BSNL supplied modem/ type I to IV
    need additional switch ( complicated).

You can connect Cable ISP to USB port ( if possible)
and BSNL ISP to Ethernet port of your computer.
( speed wont add up. If one fails other will work )

Better take on rent TYPE II or TYPE IV before deciding
    to PURCHASE a modem router.

Thnx for the quick reply..the problem is that I have cable broadband with out any modem and so connecting to a USB port is not an option..I think I will go for a simple modem and purchase a PCI LAN card and connect my cable net to it. Also the BSNL guyz are giving me just one option, that too to buy. So just tell me a simple no frills modem that does the job

Reject the PURCHASE option for an adsl modem with a
single out put. They cannot compel you to buy it.

Tell, how many computers you have . DESKtop/LaPtop ?

Your cable modem already connected to ethernet port of your computer.

Tell your location and your budget for a modem/wifirouter.
Go through the second website given.

ADSL technology is being implemented by BSNL. It is different from the router which u are now using for cable internet. I would suggest u invest on the router from BSNL. U can exchange it with them if it gets faulty (within one year). UTStar modems/routers are the best, please ask for them.

NO no friends...I have no router/modem between my PC and the ISP,just the cable that directly plugs into the RJ-45 jack. I have just one PC and will but a wi-fi router later when I buy a Laptop. So plz reassess the situation. Won't a 2nd LAN card do the job?

No yaar. The main telephone line from BSNL is connected to a device called splitter. The splitter has two outputs. One is connected to the modem/router and another is connected to the telephone. This is the arrangement of BSNL Broadband.

So u see that the router/modem is an integral part in an ADSL connection. Since u are planning to buy a laptop in the near future, u can opt for a Type 4 modem with wifi access.

OK hold on either there is some typing from me or you all are misinterpreting it. I know that I should have a modem for BSNL connection. What I want is some way so that I can see both my cablenet and dataone connection in my N/w connection. So I guess if I buy a PCI LAN card then I will be able to plug both the BSNL modems o/p in one port and my existing cablenet wire in the other. I hope now things are clear or maybe I am not getting this thing in my head. I want a modem suggestion from you'll.And plz see that I am not getting any options for modems from the BSNL guy. No type-II or type-IV. So I have decided to buy one.

Do u mean to say u want to use both the connections simultaneously?

Your current cable internet is connected to your LAN Card right?

And the BSNL connection will also be connected to the LAN Card, right? So if u have one LAN Card then either one of them will be listed. If u can invest on two Lan Cards, u can keep them both connected.

The modem is purely based upon your choice. I fail to see why BSNL is getting the upperhand there? Usually we can choose any modem from BSNL we want to. But their availability will be limited to the spare modems lying in the exchange.

Please revert back if u have more doubts

OK so now the air seems clear. Now one reason that BSNL has upper hand is that I don't want the connection to come more late than this. Almost 4.5 months and now I don't want them to make further delays. they clearly stated that they will be providing only one modem from pronet. So I was asking for modem/routers that I can get from outside.
Please provide at least one model no.

I am using a D-Link 2540T router. U can choose from the various DSL modems from the D-Link and Linksys stable. For details contact the nearest computer hardware shop
