a bit offtopic..

DL blank DVDs still cost almost about Rs.300 per piece in india. i wonder how the DL pirated movie DVDs (containing 3-4 HQ movies i.e. more than 4.37 gb i.e. DL) are sold for 70-80 bucks? i always wanted to clear this point. can anyone explain this?

^^^ I don't think the high cost of those media are justified... The marketers are just taking advantage of the situation to charge us more, but in reality it will cost them a fraction of the original cost.

Saurav,

Commercial DVDs (including pirated ones) are never burnt. They are pressed.

Most of these pirated DVDs originate from factories in China, Malayasia, etc. A master is created and the duplicating machines take over. The duplicating machines use a plain transparent plastic disc. On the bottom side, the silver film is directly pressed and on the top side the cover is pressed.

For blank media, the similar process is used, except that instead of the written film, a writeable film is pressed.

thanks a lot j4k for the info. but this raised one more question in my mind. if DL pirated dvds can be produced at such low costs, why are no chinese blank media brands doing the same by introducing low price DL blank DVDs? it would instantly be a success. i mean if these pirated DL dvds are created and burnt and then sold for 70-80 bucks in india keeping some margin for profit - then why is the rate of DL blank media almost 5 times these rates?

Only in India they are selling for high price. I purchased a box of 25 DVD-D/L (Memorex) for $35. This translates to little less than Rs. 70 per disk.

And that was in 2007. Prices must have come down since then.

Are you sure about the pricing? I have bought a 5 pack MoserBaer DL DVDs (8.4Gb) for 65/- per DVD with a proper bill. It used to be ~85/- per DVD a year ago.

Whoa...wait a minute before passing judgements.

I know the difference between a regular blank dvd and a DL blank DVD. I have been using them for nearly 2 years now. Infact I use them to burn large iso images.

and speaking of regular blank DVDs I get a 50 pack for 9/- a piece.

What part of the world are you living in?

The Ebay price for a 5 pack DL dvd of moserbaer is Rs.700/-. According to you - you got the 5 pack for Rs.325/-. Plz share the source.

Yes, when i earlier said on this thread that the prices are about 300 per piece - i was wrong. i realized it now. but the prices used to be 300-350 per piece 1-2 years ago.

It is a local shop near to where I live. It basically deals with all kind of PC related stuff like Blank CDs, DVDs, usb drives, speakers, keyboards, mice, etc. I've been buying things from that shop for the past 10 years or so.

unfortunately/fortunately we don't have street views available with Google earth where I live, otherwise I could have shown you the exact location.

Coming back to the point: When you have such cheap data storage available, it becomes very easy to burn large games, software, movies downloaded from the torrents onto permanent media for a long lasting storage.

I have recently found out that 500GB portable HD is available for ~3500/- Now that kind of easy storage will encourage piracy; not directly but it will help.
