There is no software shutdown option for modems (most of them, that is). A modem is not designed for being shut off.

    Default modem shut down

SDS (Shutdown Scheduler) screenshot and download at SnapFiles.com

the program seems to be in Polish(?)
save the screen shot with English windows.

    Not tried.

When your Download Manager ,shuts down computer
modem also to be switched off.

    TRY and give feedback.

A modem can be kept on safely for 8 hours at a stretch. Keep it well ventilated and periodically clean the dust on it.

My firends in US keep the modem on 24x7.

@essbebe, how on earth will it possible to switch off the electric supply to the modem?

The clue is" modem also to be switched Off !"
can be done but little complicated and beyond the
    scope of this thread.

I am not challenging - I am just asking.

There is a solution however. When I used to live in UK, I saw electronically timed plug sockets. These were mainly used for electric water heaters. This device had a timer device and an electrical socket. It directly plugged into the standard wall socket. You could set the start time and end time on this and you could control the appliance power that way.

That option will shutdown the PC; not the modem/router.

Depends upon the quality of the modem. Cheap Chinese routers tend to act up in case of over heating. But reputed brands remain stable when when it is heated up.

Mine is kept on 24x7. Am using a D-Link 2540T.

    added Rep+

    # Don't require free electricity outlet. (Draws power from the computer's power supply.)
    # Convenient for Computer Users....
Also check up USB only modems, which draw power from the computer.

    Downloading Power Shutdown
    Shareware: NOT TRIED
Power Shutdown is an auto-shutdown program.
    It has 11 commands:
Logoff, restart, turn off the computer, play media files, screen saver, standby, disconnect the modem, and more.

You can choose to launch the commands...
    at the exact time, or
after a specified time has elapsed, or
when certain conditions are met.(For example, when the file downloading is done, Power Shutdown will disconnect the modem automatically)

1.Mention your modem make and model ?
Are you using a cable modem ? You mean ADSL MODEM ?

2.Needed Power supply details of the PS adapter for the modem.
can i take the power from my computer to switch on modem so that if i shudown my comp the modem also switches off
    NO. This way better.

computer on +modem switch ON=Modem ON
computer OFF +modem switch on= Modem OFF
AC input to modem from "ON" condition of Computer Power switch ( Front Panel) Soldering required.

3.Also any spare power cable for CDROM /floppy drive etc,
in the computer. ( from the SMPS PSU of computer )

    @superprash2003

it started with "Not possible" timers,
then "maybe" PCI modem/ USB port ,
    then "'possible" etc.

    Will wait for feedback.

    Good idea.
But this depends on computer/modem being
    switched OFF first.
    WHEND/L
    completed.
Some sort of current "no load" relay/trip circuit/ may be required.

Reverse of MCB ( miniature circuit breaker) which trips when current Overload/short is sensed !

The modem may work , but the power adapter may get too hot and go faulty.
Switch off lights/fans/ electronic eqpts/TV/computer/Modem/ etc when not in use.
    Save electricity.
