Default strange problem with BSNL data usage.

    Hello everyone,
I have a major issue with my BSNL Broadband connection. I have 500C. So I used to hibernate the machine
with Scheduler set to wake up at 2:00 am and download torrents. The entire system is off till
2:am EXCEPT the modem. (UTSTARCOM 300R2U). I have checked the usage in the BSNL portal and found that
almost everyday from around 12:AM to 2:15 am , there is a huge data transfer (around 200 MB !).
I have no idea how this is happening. What the hell my modem is doing during that time? I will hibernate
the system at around 10:00 pm. But the usage starts after 12 in the midnight.

Please help me. Note that I have set a port open (in the modem set the ip of the machine) thats all.

    thanks in advance.

If you are in pppoe mode, you must reboot your modem at 2am , otherwise the previous session will not be terminated properly and you will be charged for some of your 2-8am usage. Now, please state if u are using PPPOE or bridge mode (dialer) ???

In your ADSL Web GUI there is a option in the section setting of PPPOE the Idel Time Out. Set the Idel time out 60 Second or 1 Minutes. If the Idel Time Out say Second then put the value 60 or if say Minutes then put the value 1.
When your Computer in the mode of hibernate then your ADSL will get disconnect from the net automatically because of inactivity. After Starting your Computer the ADSL will automatically Log in with the ISP.

What Leo has said is probably the correct reason.

BSNL measures the usage in slots of 30 minutes. So when your system comes out of hibernation, starts torrent and downloads data, you may have forgotten to reboot the modem a little past 2 AM. Thus, 1:45 AM to 2:15 AM is counted as chargeable usage.

    Please read these threads:

    1. Automatic rebooting of router at 2 AM and 8 AM
    2. Ultimate Night Usage Manager.

I have ppoe connection. Is it possible to use the same config to close and open the connection with a batch file or something.
from my telnet commands, I can see my modem supports the follwing

    logout
    reboot
    adsl
    ifconfig
    kill
    ppp

    ping

    there are two commands
    > adsl connection start --up
    > adsl connection start --down

trying to make an exe so that I can schedule these.

as seeing your problem i think some one else is using you account ...
because you are telling that after 12:00 am the download starts where as your system will boot up at 2:00 AM and BSNL will use 30 min session mode so even if it boots at 2 am(your time) and bsnl thime shall be 1:55 am even if thats the case its still no where near to 12:00 am so guessing ......

and answer to my own theory is your modem uses PPPoE mode so its 24/7 logged in and hence nobody else can use the same user id....

i am out of options, as of now try the options what seniors have said let me also try out some more things and will get back to you....

If you refer to the guides that I gave links to in the previous post, they will do that exactly.

You will also require a software such as WakeUpFromStandby to wake up the computer.

to boot up a computer there is really no need to keep it in standby ....! there is a built-in function in most of the motherboards itself check in yours... if you set the time there at that particular time the system automatically boots up.... so for faster booting you can hibernate the system and turn off.... just keep the power supply on to the pc thats all is needed...

I am able to schedule the PC for automatic bootup from Hibernated. But currently my problem is with the modem. I tried the follwoing script to run. But it is not excecuting the reboot command. THe script is pausing at the step where its waiting for ">". I even tried all the scripts given in the forum. But still the command executes when I manually press the KB.
I am sure its problem with the script only.

    SEND "1\m"

Today I observed that BSNL charged me around 4.3 GB usage during 10"30 PM to 7 AM. Even though there was no usage between 10:30 and 2AM. I am going to complaint to Accounts officer.
