Default Dynamic IP address assignment for the PPP interface

    Hi,

I am curious if any of you are familiar with the IP address assignment policies of BSNL.

I am noticing that IP address of the PPPoE interface is changed frequently for no reason and this screws up the applications I am running behind the DSL modem because of the stateful NAT firewall.

Is there any way to configure the DSL modem to request the same IP address every time once it is assigned? Is it normal for the IP addres to change every time?

Here are the details about the DSL modem I am using.

    Device Info

    Board ID: 96338L-2M-8M
    Software Version: 3.08.BSNL_02.01.02_tr64.
    Bootloader (CFE) Version: 1.0.37-8.7
    Firmware Version: UT300R2U.0011.01
    Hardware Version: UT300R2U 2.2
    Model Name: UT300R2U

    Thanks..

BSNL will give only Dynamic IP address.... it will not provide static IP unless you opt for it.... there is no way in modem you can request the same IP ...
simple ex: your ip now is 100.100.100.100 ok now you disconnect it and that IP will be given to some 1 else ... now when you connect back how can you get the same IP which is being used already.....?

The best solution is talk to BSNL and opt for static IP or you be in PPPoE mode and try not to switch off the router at all.... until it is online you have the same IP

Static IPs are given to high end Business Plans only.

Well.. The IP address is changing even if the DSL modem is not physically reset. I guess may be the DSL link is getting reestablished for some reason. Not sure if there is a way to double check this.

I logged into the DSL modem and poked the Linux interfaces and I noticed that IP address is getting changed pretty frequently.

    # ifconfig ppp_0_35_1
    ppp_0_35_1 Link encap:Point-Point Protocol
    inet addr:117.199.225.21 P-t-P:117.199.224.1 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1460 Metric:1
    RX packets:31 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:27 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
    RX bytes:4653 (4.5 KiB) TX bytes:8205 (8.0 KiB)

Off Topic: As this modem is running standard Linux, has anybody contacted UTStarCom to publish the sources for the modem firmware?

Every time a BB connection is established (or re-established), you may get a new IP address.

Your connection must be unstable and the modem must be connecting automatically to correct the situation. That is why the IP address is fluctuating.
