You sure can use any working DNS server for your connection as long as that DNS server does not drop/deny your request. But I'd suggest you check the latency first. Ideally your own ISP's DNS response should be faster since you are basically within the same segment and even when you are not, definitely closer than one on a totally different network. If you are using XP you can configure multiple DNS servers for your connection. So you could have a long list of DNS servers including BSNL, Airtel and even OpenDNS servers. You can change the order/priority of the servers and see which of them works for you best

    airtel DNS Server

    203.145.184.13
    202.56.250.5
    -----------------------------
Simply change your dns and try pinging a site like google.com
Choose the one which has least latency

DNS does not play much part apart from IP address resolution. It will help in speeding up speed only to a small extent. The quicker the IP address is resolved, the faster your page will load.

But all this also depends upong server ping time. Consider this example:

    a) Suppose you wish to login to indiabraodband.net (this forum). Then you will type this URL in your browser address bar.
    b) The DNS will resolve www.indiabroadband.net to 69.162.110.114.
    c) Suppose you are using default BSNL provided DNS and it takes 100 ms to resolve this.
    d) If you are using OpenDNS, it may be quicker and suppose OpenDNS takes only 30 ms to resolve the name.
    e) So, effectively, you have saved 70 ms, and page will load 70ms quicker by using openDNS.

    But ...

    a) If BSNL DNS server ping time is 200 ms whereas openDNS server ping time is 300 ms.
    b) Then BNSL DNS will save you 100 ms in ping time. Substract 70 ms from this and BSNL DNS still works 30 ms faster.
    c) It all depends upon your location. Check the DNS ping times. Switch the DNS and check destination IP ping times.

In my case, I found that BSNL DNS works faster.

I have a question. When I request an URL in my browser, my machine sends out a DNS querry to the nameserver. Is this request sent direct to the nameserver or is it routed through the default gateway configured on my end. If it is sent directly then how does it find the route to that nameserver, since the routing features are configured on the gateway and not on my machine? If it is the latter, then how does it matter what DNS settings I have on my end? Since my request is going through a gateway, the DNS settings on the gateway should take effect. Also if this is the case then how is it possible to have DNS settings of a nameserver outside my network, since the gateway can restrict you to use only your ISP's nameservers

    Thanks

When the bsnl dns server is up and running, itz the one offering the best speeds..
    No doubt about that...
But due to congestion on holidays and so on, they do go down..
better stick to bsnl dns and when it breaks down, shift to open dns or airtel dns or whatever...

All network requests (local/intranet or internet) always go thru the respective gateway. Nothing goes to internet directly. Gateway IP is also the router of that circuit that does the NAT.

    Agreed.
Presuming normal home based broadband settings with a modem.
    1. My pc ip 192.168.1.2 gets translated to 139.158.14.1 (example). Am I right is saying that this NAT is done by the modem/router at my end?
    2. Taking the case of a dns querry, when this request hits the gateway(the router of the circuit) which then routes it to the nameserver, does the nameserver address come pre-specified as the one set at my modem/router? If not, then can the gateway specify the nameserver address?

Also if my assumption no. 1 is true, then does that mean that after i cross the modem at my end, I have a public ip and can i point to a gateway over the internet instead of the default gateway?

    Thanks

    @just4kix

    any ideas?

    Consider this scenario.

    1. You are having a modem and a PC connected to internet.
    2. Your modem's internal IP address is 192.168.1.1 and your PC has the IP address as 192.168.1.10.
    3. Your ISP has given assigned the IP address to your modem as 117.196.96.108.
    4. Your ISP's default gateway is 117.196.96.1.
    5. You have set the DNS in your modem as
      Primary: 208.67.222.222
      Secondary: 208.67.220.220
    6. You are trying to reach IBF at 69.162.110.114.

    This is what will happen:

    • Your net (http) request originating from 192.168.1.10 will be sent as a request originating from 117.196.96.108.
    • This is NAT and is done by your router.
    • BSNL gateway server (117.196.96.1) will receive this request. There is a router on the BSNL network also.
    • It will convert the request originating from 117.196.96.108 as a request originating from 117.196.81.22 (as an example). This is NAT done by BSNL router.
    • It will then try to locate the Primary DNS, 208.67.222.222.
    • Once located, the primary DNS will resolve the http URL to 69.162.110.114.
    • Then thru a series of hops from one gateway to another, you will reach the destination.

Hope this is clear. Try the command:

    Code:
    tracert www.indiabroadband.net

    Thanks, that explains everything.
    One question:

The bsnl router will locate this DNS because it was configured on my modem/router.
Can the bsnl router have a different Primary DNS configured? and can it enforce that configuration on the http request made by me?

    Thanks

    BSNL will not enforce policies.

Your DNS settings are taken from your router. If you have left them as "Use Default", then BSNL will use the BSNL DNS.
