Default For higher netspeed which modem is better : BSNL/Netgear/Linksys

    Hi All,
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. This forum has really improved my knowledge.

I am planning to buy the Modem (not router and modem as seperate but modem withing router i.e single entity) and have both Laptop and desktop PC. Currently i m using rented BSNL Modem (Type - IV wireless). My plan is Home 500 (256kbps - 2 Mbps) but i generally get download speed around 30-45 kbps(in night i get 70 -80 kbps). My friends told me that as per the plan that i should get higher speed (around 125 to 150 kbps). I have following queries regarding this.

    1. Whether netspeed(upload/download) depends on the modem brand ?
    2. Whether wired/wireless modem makes difference in the netspeed assuming that i browse by keeping my laptop near to the wireless modem.
    3. I have read/heard that private modem brands like Netgear/Linksys are having good performance.Good performace in what aspect ? Shall i go for private modem brands for getting good netspeed or stick to the BSNL modem only. Also tell me good model numbers for the Netgear/Linksys modems.

    thanks a lot

    Hi!bro

i would answer your queries one by one ..............

looking at what you have quoted that your plan is HOME 500 ........... it turns out to be that the speed you are getting is quite slow ........ and i guess you have mistakenly quoted the speeds as "kbps" while it should be "KBps" anyways still it is slow and yeah the attainable speeds are not 125-150 KBps but around 250 KBps but this whole thing of speed depends on a lot of factors .......... so do check around with BSNL and complain to them about the speed problem which you are getting but i don't think BSNL's Customer care is that good for all this .........

(1).net speeds don't depend on the brand but on the hardware that the modem composes of and the bandwidth alloted to you by your ISP............. i mean the modem type which you have is fully capable of supporting speeds greater than what BSNL is currently offering ..........

(2).no wired/wireless modem doesn't make any difference as the wireless modem supplied to you supports Wifi thus the modem technology can support higher speeds than what BSNL is currently offering but there may be difference in the signal strength if in case you move away from the signal support range ......... which may cause Disconnection etc ...... maybe slow speeds as well ........... but as in your case there shouldn't be any difference .......

(3).good in performance may relate to many things like the features which the router offers , it doesn't get heated up easily , supports higher bandwidth , has a no. of connecting ports/options , doesn't suffer from frequent disconnection due to heating b'coz of continuos usage , good built quality, easy to configure ,
has online support for firmware etc. etc .........

as already listed by me that the brand of the router shouldn't make any difference in the speeds attainable depending upon various factors mentioned above ............... and for the sake of some good modem no. sry but i don't have any idea about it ......... hopefully some other forum members would guide you through it ............

and guys please do correct me if i'm wrong somewhere .............

Go for Netgear DG834G which I'm currently using. It's a great modem.

    Hello Bro,

Firstly i would suggest you to take the Modem on rental ............. and try all the modem type and see which one suits you and your needs ...........
As infact you didn't mention as to what are your needs ............. i mean how many computer's do you want to connect, do you want wireless connectivity or not etc. etc. ............
Usually in my area BSNL supplies a ZTE ZXDSL 831 AII as type one modem (firstly do check which modem(brand/no.) is provided in your region as type - I modem) ............... and it is fully capable of addressing your speed concerns but the down part about it is that it is chinese build so some people do critize it as a chinese crap ...................
secondly this modem type has two option for connection :-
one being the USB (one port)
second being the ethernet (one port)...............
and BSNL does provide a CD with this modem type in case they don't provide you with a CD just search the forum around and you would probably find the USB driver's and manual for this modem type .................
but like i already mentioned some people have this point in mind of it being a chinese made thus they feel it is not that good ............... and if you are among this group then you can opt. for any other brand modem as well ............... sorry but i don't have any idea about the good brand names and their model no.'s ............
