Lightbulb Planning to Move to BSNL - Plz Help

Hi Everyone,

I am finally planning to shift to BSNL broadband. I know some of the things i am asking here are discussed many times on many threads but I need some detailed answers here. BSNL users - PLZ help.

1) which plan would be best for heavy downloading?

2) is there an option of broadband connection without landline?

3) what are the changes in home 500 c and home 500 c+ plans from normal home 500 plan?

4) how much speed on average do people get in the night unlimited hours?

5) how much will be the average download in the night unlimited period? Will i be able to download about 5 gb in tha period everyday?

6) i see many users complaining about huge bills ... i am a bit worried becoz of this ... can downloading in the night unlimited hours almost daily be risky?

7) how much the bill eventually comes to be on home 500 plan if i dont cross the 2.5 gb limit? what are the additional costs apart from Rs.500?

8) What are these type 1,2 ... etc modems? Which modem should i choose and why?

9) How does Torrents perform on BSNL? is the speed slow?

10) How much time will it take to get a new connection? Whats the best way to apply!?

1) H500 series plan is the best for heavy downloading

2) Some circles do provide such an option..checkout with your local exchange

3) New Page 3 and New Page 3

4) Most of the users are getting 180~210 kBps for torrent downloads and 210~230 kBps for direct http downloads.

5) I am able to clock 5.3GB every night during the free time.

6) Billing problems if raised can be solved with the help of the accounts officer for your telephone number.

7) I am charged 503/-. 3/- extra for educational cess.

8) New Page 3

9) BSNL has throttling techniques. Enabling encryption should work out fine..

10) New connections are allocated according to the waiting list. If no waiting list is there for your exchange, u should be getting the connection within a week.

which plan are you using? home 500/c/c+ ?

You said you are charged Rs.503/-

What about the Fixed Monthly Charges for Telephone mentioned in the tariff chart? and the modem rental charges?

Which variation of Home 500 plan do you suggest? The Landline phone usage will be minimal in my case.

1) which plan would be best for heavy downloading?
Now it's not easy to say because all limited user never get 2 mbps speed in night but still at least in Kolkata most of the user getting around 2 mbps speed at night(I am also getting that) so Home 500,C,C+ or other limited plan is best for heavy downloading probably UL 1350 also good but obviously it's little high rental plan.
Quote:
2) is there an option of broadband connection without landline?
No land line is must but if you apply for combo plan at least no phone rental will be apply then
Quote:
3) what are the changes in home 500 c and home 500 c+ plans from normal home 500 plan?
  • Home 500 -- rental 500 Rs + phone rental according to plan free usage 2.5 GB free call according to landline plan
  • Home 500C --Rental 500 Rs no phone rental free usage 1.5 GB free calls 175
  • Home 500C+ --Rental 600 Rs no phone rental free usage 2.5 GB free calls 50
Quote:
4) how much speed on average do people get in the night unlimited hours?
No guarantee, but still i am getting in kolkata 1.5-2 mbps.I am hoping you also get such speed.

Quote:
5)Will i be able to download about 5 gb in tha period everyday?
Probably little short of 5 GB better not expect too much just on a average 4-4.5 GB per night(may be it can touch 5 GB sometimes)

6) i see many users complaining about huge bills ... i am a bit worried becoz of this ... can downloading in the night unlimited hours almost daily be risky?
Normally there is no risk present (start download 2.05 AM and stop at 7:55 AM for safe) but how can I say that they will never make a mistake if they do so then obviously your bill will be revised but remember may be you have to waste some time for that.

7) how much the bill eventually comes to be on home 500 plan if i dont cross the 2.5 gb limit? what are the additional costs apart from Rs.500?
Which plan ?
If your plan is Home 500 C+ then your bill will be 600+ 10% service tax =660 Rs(approx) (without usage and extra calls)

8) What are these type 1,2 ... etc modems? Which modem should i choose and why?
It's all vary according to USB,Ethernet& wifi.Type I has one Ethernet port & USB port Type II 4 ethernet prot Type III & IV have wifi facility.
SO choice according to need.

9) How does Torrents perform on BSNL? is the speed slow?
torrents work in BSNL BB very good just port forward needed for modem(except Nokia-siemens C2110)

Normally it takes 15-20 days to get new connection with password in calcuttatelephones exchange but sometimes exchange have few problem in that case it can take 1-2 month also so before apply BB please go your local exchange and ask that question they will tell you perfectly.
Go exchange and apply the BB connection if local exchange deny to take application then apply in zonal head exchange try to avoid online connection it's did not work in all area.
Which exchange you belongs ?then may i help you .

I am using the H500 original plan. Using this connection since March 2005.

I am being billed according to One India Plan. I get a monthly quota of 50 free calls with a rental of 180/-. No modem rental charges as the modem was purchased outright.

I am unsure whether we can select individual telephone plans while opting for broadband. I mean there exists many LL plans from BSNL. But i am not sure whether they can be coupled with a broadband connection enabled line. Fellow board members may answer that query..

u need to apply for landline + BB simultaneously. in fact as quote it as landline needed for the BB. Few days back there was sepcial offer by BSNL in out area. they were offering Landline(Rs 49 per month....only incoming) + BB(any plan). Check that offer in ur local BSNL office

Dear

You can opt for 500C plan wherein night download is frree + U get 175 free calls. I am from bangalore. Here Ugadai mela is going on. Modem is free if u opt for annual payment. Pl check at ur exchange. I am happy with 500C plan. 1.5 GB free download; night 2 to 8 unlimiated download; 175 free calls.

see if u go for H500 C then u have to pay a minimum total of Rs. 562/-(bb+tel, incl service tax & all), u get a 175 free local calls there, & this is the minimum charge, if u spend more in bb or tel then u have to pay acc to the rates. if u go for H500 then u have to pay 500 for bb + phone rental acc to the plan & serivce tax which will cost minimum Rs. 697(if u go for sulabh plans for phone) & minimum charges for H500 C+ is also quite near to H500.

as i see u r in kolkata, i think u have to apply for phone 1st then go for bb, that what happens in saltlake exchng in kolkata(dunno if other exchng follows the same procedure or not, so better u confirm with ur local exchng)

p.s. be sure to check the activation date of ur BB as they start considering the bill period from that day only, so if ur bb gets activated on 15th Mar, then they will start making the bill period from 15-15, & do expect a 1k-2k bill in 1st month becoz of lots of security & other deposits

All the questions are best answered by the forum members. I always used to be late to answer as I reach my place very late. I have 500C plan and get average d/l speed of 91 kB. I don't know anybody in my area using BSNL BB so don't have any idea of the speed in my area. What I am getting is sufficient for my use. I hardly do any heavy d/l unless needed.

I got my connection about a year after applying though I got a landline connection. But one of my friend from Kolkatta got his connection within 3 working days. Kolkatta is the place where BSNL introduces anything 1st and the service is of top quality as per my friend.
