    Default Modem - Router Help

Hi ! I have SmartAX MT882 modem given by BSNL way back in Nov. 2005. I use it onto my desktop which has XP running on it. I now need to use it for my laptop which runs VISTA. I've tried connecting the modem directly but since its a 2005 piece it doesn't have the drivers and apparently wont work with VISTA.

Could you ppl suggest any compatible routers for this modem i have ? And which ones the best or the popular routers ? I have no clue abt routers. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Also lemme know if this modem has any issues with routers or any such things.

Any extra info required lemme know pls. thanks.

    Hi

    Welcome to Indiabroadband Forum

as you said you want to get a new router so i would like to suggest you to go for a modem router and not to connect your old modem with router, there are number of good modem routers available in market, you can get anyone like Netgear, D-Link, Speedtouch or Linksys. I like Netgear DG834G v3 routers and apart from that you can go for the latest Netgear DG834G version 4 router too

Hope it will help you, still if you have any more doubts then please post

    1.
it doesn't have the drivers and apparently wont work with VISTA.
Are you trying to use the USB port of the modem MT882 ?
The USB driver of MT882 may work for VISTA. to be tried.
    2.
Try the LAN port of modem and ethernet port of laptop
and get connected to Internet as usual.
CONFIRM. No changes in modem .

3(a).Any wifi router can be used with MT882.
    example Netgear WGR614 ( I am using with MT882 now )
    (b)Or buy a three-in One model
(c)and keep MT882 as standby if purchased.

Firstly thank you for replying. I was just beggining to wonder if no one would reply.

Are the NETGEAR models u've mentioned compatible with BSNL BROADBAND ?
Any idea on much they cost ?
What is their range (distance) of wi-fi ?
Which models have the maximum range ?
Is the modem cum router given by BSNL for 1600 rupees superior to NETGEAR ? Or on the contrary terrible ?

Sorry about this. I was away on tour on 12th and
    did not check this forum.
    compatible for BSNL Broadband ?
All ADSL modems/ wifi routers can be used.
Any idea on how much they cost ?
ONLY wif router starting from say Rs 1500
    Buffalo models will cost more.

What is their range (distance) of wi-fi ?
Which models have the maximum range
for Standard models a range of 30 feet radius claimed
    ((*conditions apply !)
    Dual Antenna Buffalo models recommended.
What is the max distance you have in mind?
Is the modem cum router given by BSNL for 1600 rupees
Better to rent it first and try. Cannot say what model they will give you. Many models use the same board
    and firmware with cosmetic changes.

    example:
Chennai Telephones- Changing password in DataOne Pre-configured modem

You won't get a type IV adsl modem+wifi router for Rs1600/= anywhere else!.
Since BSNL buys in lakhs of units ( LOWEST TENDER !)
the cost to customer also ,is kept low
    to encourage Broadband usage.

    Thanks for replying.
I tried the LAN port of modem and ethernet port of laptop (vista) but didnt work.

I need a range of atleast 50ft. Basically very good range. Also wanted to know if i'd be getting the same broadband speeds (210-230KBps) on my laptop too when i use a router ? Apologise abt asking such a silly question if u think so but i have no clue whatsoever abt routers.
And Could you expand on "Dual Antenna Buffalo models". They have better range u said. How better ? And any model numbers of those ?

Finally would you suggest a adsl modem cum router or just a router to hook onto the existing MT882 ? Could you mention the model numbers of both the standard ones and the superior ones in both categories ?

P.S - putting all this aside would you suggest renting out the BSNL modem ?

YES. (With the MT882 and) Type /II or IV
    wireless modem/router supplied by BSNL>

    2.
Try the LAN port of modem and ether net port of laptop
and get connected to Internet as usual.
At present you can use only one system at a time.
    Since your Desktop is working,
( No changes in modem required)
( compare /duplicate settings of Desktop computer)
probably you have not set up LAN for your Laptop.
    Start All programs/Accessories/Communications
    set up LAN connection.follow instructions.
( I am using XP pro sp3 Vista access could be different )

    Post following Data for laptop
START RUN type cmd type ipconfig /all

    Para two:
3.You can try the USB port for the desktop later.
Then except for mobility both Desktop/Laptop
    can work together.

    4. By positioning the WIFI router at a greater height,
the range you need may be possible..
For test ,BSNL unit on rent for one
    month advised.

    5. "Routers" for using more than one computer.

Please try Google search for "Buffalo" details.

If you use a basic modem and a wifi router,
and if Router fails at least you get BB connection.
If you buy a combined one ,
    failure means No Internet.

    Default Range of Netgear614

It has been tried within a radius of 10 feet.
I had kept the unit at a higher height say 6 feet
not on my desk but on a cupboard.
maximum range for low priced models could be a radius of 30 feet.

By positioning 1)the Unit near the window, ( free space )
......................2)Increasing or extending the Antenna height
    the range may improve.
Some have used aluminium foil as a dish antenna to increase signal strength in a particular direction.

Our houses and flats are cement/steel/concrete buildings
    which attenuate wireless signals.
Simply put, when you use a cellphone , you move out
for "Line of Sight" access to the tower to improve audio/
    strength or signals.

The power rating of the WIFI adaptor also matters.
    It is in milliwatts!
    Para two
Kindly do Google search for "Buffalo wifi routers".
Ignore reference to me if I am also listed under "Buffalo"!

@moderator does not like too many links in my post

and says users know how to do search themselves !
