Thread: Night Unlimited Usage timings

I know this is a recurring question, but I have seen that different people have different opinions on this.
What does BSNL do if I don't disconnect the internet after 8AM, while downloading during night time?
I fear the whole thing is billed! Is it so? Seen many people claim it works the way it should, ie. usage during 2-8AM is subtracted. But the thing is that they don't have hourly usage records. They only maintain session by session records.

So what happens if I connect at say 2AM and keep downloading until say 8:30AM?

bsnl maintains session by session records, each session half an hour long. if u connect at 1:59 then the downloads during 1:59 to 2:29 are recorded as paid downloads and after that only free session begins but since it started at 2:29 it wil last till 8:29 and aftr that only paid sessions begins. its the way bsnl works. if u connect at 2 and keep downloading till 8:30 ur downloads from 8 to 8:30 will be counted..

Hey Man! Some entirely new information has arisen. I don't want to sound offensive, but can you tell me where did you get this information? Also, which circle/ state are you from? Is this policy followed everywhere in India?

atfirst i got some problems and some of my my downloads during 2 to 8 were counted as paid. then i tried different settings and i tired many methods for several days and came to this conclusion. now am following it and hav not been charged even a single mb during free hours. now i connect at some 10:02/3 pm and keeps my pc online and schedules my download manager to start at 2:05 and keeps downloading till 8am. i download some 4.8gb approximately everyday.

dont forget to synch ur time with IST first

*You mean at 02:05 AM.Isn't it?
and another thing, If I started downloading at 7:58AM, according to you I should get free downloads until 8:28AM?

arre yar dont do stupid things. if u connect at some 7:01am and even if u disconnect at 7:58 bsnl wont see it and wil only record as u disconnected at 8:01 and if u connect at 7:58 bsnl wil start that session only after the end of previous one that is 8:01 and it will be counted as paid. just stay on the safe side and download frm 2:05 to 8:00.

Don't be offensive with me. There are all kind of people around. Some people are too lazy (there are so many threads n this forum and many other places on this web with so many minuscule details) that they don't try to find on their own just try to take help from others (without knowing that the the guy helping to resolve his/her problem is doing the necessary web search, etc.)

There are people who come forward to help tirelessly and tired of that.

I try to solve all my problems my myself as there are so much information available for free

its nothing like that if we start the downloading at 7:58 a.m till 8:30 or whatever timing u say George .they record each an every second free means from 2:00 a.m to 8:00 a.m absolutely free at whatever time u start ur session.

if u start downloading at 1:30 a.m to 3:00 a.m means u will be charged only for half an hour

this can go seriously wrong, since BSNL does not bill properly....

As far as BSNL billing program is concerned, it will treat a session as within the free time only if BOTH log-in and log-out happens within the free time.
Otherwise it is counted as billable usage.

A session always from log-in to log-out/disconnection, what ever the duration may be. a session can be 2 min long or 6 hrs long.

there is nothing like "half-hour session"s. for that to be a reality, the connection would have to be automatically broken by the exchange every 30 min.

I have NEVER logged in and logged out at free times, i connect at 9:05 or 10:05pm daily and start downloading at 2:08am. y dont u try connecting at 1:55am and download till 2:30am, i bet u wil be charged for all data transfer btw 1:55 to 2:25am

i only told what was happening to me wen using BSNL and i didnt mean half-hour sessions every time. its just the way bsnl counts the free time, as bsnl only checks whether its btw 2 & 8 in sessions of 30mins. wat i said is 100% true frm my experience. u try my above method and check, u guys r saying such things bcoz i dnt think u guys hav ever connected before and disconnected after free time. y dont u try something before u tell it

also y dont u check ur usage details, free downloads are counted in exactly half hour sessions like

2009-03-13 02:07:15 2009-03-13 08:07:15

daily I dissconnect the net at around 7:58 and download for another 25 mins at good speeds for free.

What are you saying? When was I offensive with you? Or you meant, not to mind what you said? Well, as for lazy, since I don't know you and you don't know me, I won't comment on that. I'd only say, I am the one who's been helping my friends and friends of friends with matters related to Computers from Time Immemorial. So no question of not helping myself! And, oh yes, I am still not tired of helping others!

See, this table copied from my usage portal clearly shows, that when I connected at 7:58:07 AM my free session lasted till 08:28:0707 AM which was not billed, and then at the same time another row shows that another session started at 08:28:07AM which was billed. I commend the research. Reps added.

Hi, please see the enclosed picture. I started downloading at 01:59:20 one day, by mistake, and I got charged for the entire 500 MB downloaded till the connection broke on its own after a half-hour. Otherwise, I would have been charged for the entire night! I wrote about this to the Commercial Officer and got no reply. They never reply to your letters, but they will correct your bill when you contact them personally.The night-sessions are sometimes broken, but I think it is disconnection of your modem.Sometimes, the entire session goes smoothly, please see high-lighted items in my BB usage for Feb 09.BSNL servers do not work as well as expected, so please do not take chances ! Sometimes, I have observed that sessions till 08:29 AM, as astutely observed by our friends, does get into free billing,but it is better to be always on the safe side. You can argue with them all you want, in small cities and towns you can get away with it, but in big cities you are stuck, if you don't have free time on your hands, and un-friendly BSNL officials. So be on the safer side!

it didnt broke by itself. thats what i hav been telling u the whole time? bsnl checks whether its in the free session in intervals of half hour, wen u connected at 1:59 bsnl will see that it doesnt come under free session and counts. after half hour, ie, at 2:29 it wil again check and see that its in free session and thereafter u wont be charged and it will last till 8:29 as at 1:59 bsnl wil see its in free session and only at 8:29 wil it check again and wil thereafter downloads will be counted.

Ah, thank you, perhaps you are right. Perhaps that is why my session broke after 2:29. But, it also happens that sessions are broken during free periods also, do you have any explanations for them,( just for information's sake).In any case, when the breaks happen we are asleep and come to know about it only when we check the usage later.Regards and thanks!

wel til now i havnt had any such experience, may b because am using using always on PPoE mode. my sessions never break on itself except in the beginning and end of free session
