Default BSNL Unlimited & Multimedia Content ?

One of my friends is using a BSNL home 250 plan. As he watches a lot of video's and also uses VOIP and Video chat, the usage limit is not sufficient.

Now If he were to upgrade to BSNL unlimited 750 plan the speed would be reduced. So I'd like to know if 256 kbps is suffient for VOIP and video conferencing etc.

Is anybody using VOIP, Video chat in BSNL unlimited plans... please suggest me as to how the quality will be, If possible please post a screenshot

I have done video chats even with dial-up connections at one time. At that time, the video was of-course distracted. But still, it did come to be of use.

So, I don't think that there will be much problems with the 256kBps plan.

I didn't know much about internet and the facilities available in the internet at that time. Still, we used to have video chats with our cousin who was in Dubai. :w00t:

You will notice a major reduction in download/streaming speeds if you switch to an unlimited plan.
Even the UL1350 plan has a capped bandwidth of 512KBps
    UL750 gives 256KBps

All the limited plans are "up to 2 MBps". What this means is if your exchange is good and there are not too many people browsing when you are, you can get ~1-1.5MBps easily.

For any kind of real streaming video you need a minimum of 1MBps. Streaming video will not be good on a UL750 connection.

Don't listen to the bullshit people throw around on these forums, video conference on dialup is probably as bad as a powerpoint presentation or even worse.

Again, the problem with these limited plans is the download limit, and the speed fluctuation. This obviously depends on a number of factors like the number of people in your exchange at that time of the day. If you do get good speeds on a limited plan, then try Home500 or Home1000 which will typically give you slightly better speeds and a far bigger download limit.

If you do use the internet a *lot* and do not mind having to wait 10 minutes to see a video on youtube, then go for an unlimited plan.
The UL1350 will give you half the speed of Home 500 or less (512Kbps vs 1-1.5Mbps)

Right now in India broadband is extremely expensive and a decent unlimited connection with good bandwidth is simply not available.

    So in summary:

Home500: Casual browsing in day time, heavy downloading between 2am-8am
Home1000: Slightly better casual browsing in day time than home500 (same 2-8)
Home750: Horrible speed (256 Kbps) compared to home250/home500/home1000, but unlimited
Home1350: 512Kbps, decent speed for web browsing, not good enough for high quality audio or any kind of video, but again, unlimited.

    @rsen

    thanks for the elaborate reply.

I'm living in a kind of remote area, so I expect that not many heavy internet users will be here.

the only purpose as of now is VOIP and Skype Video...

I'm still confused by reply from you guys....

VoIP will probably need around 512 Kbps or more to work properly, so that is more or less fine with any (limited or unlimited) connection.

Skype Video or any other video conference service will ideally need at least 1 Mbps, of course, the higher the better.

In general limited plans with BSNL have better speeds.
However this is affected by the quality of your exchange and the number of users you need to contend with.
Since it's a rural area in all probability the contention ratio will be lower (less users and less heavy downloaders) but again the quality of the exchange might be poor.

Imo the best thing to do is try out home500/home1000 and then in another month 750UL/1350UL.

What you say is very vague.
First off you will get even lower speeds with unlimited plans.
Slow speeds can happen for a large number of reasons.
