Default Which modem to buy for BSNL?

    Hello all,
Finally my problems related to low speed are unveiled. The modem was the culprit over there. It is three years old. The connection is unreliable with it and for a poor line, this modem simply fails splendidly. I get speeds around 90Kbps ( bits per sec ) . My current modem is Smart MT882. Tried with another modem and it gives awesome 1.8Mbps speeds and the connection is reliable indeed. After 4 months of trouble, finally the modem was found to be working less efficiently.
I wish to buy a new modem. Please help me which modem should I buy as the BSNL people told there are Type1 and Type2 modems. Can you please help me know about their features.

    Thank you.

    Default Huawei AX MT882 replacement

Tried with another modem and it gives awesome 1.8Mbps speeds and the connection is reliable indeed.
Please buy the same model and mention Make/No. here.

Test speed with MT882 modem at speedtest.net
say Melbourne server and Mumbai server.
If you can get the above replacement modem test again.

Post adsl data of AXMt882 from Summary page.

Why select BSNL modem/s again ?.
If the MT882 was on rental basis , you can get it
rent free, . 50% of rental paid will be given as '
discount for the outright purchase. And get credit for security deposit made.

See FAQ in Bsnl tariff plan page.
    still valid offer No idea.
    trying next month myself .

    Hi superprash,
Thanks a lot for the reply. Do I get the privilege to choose my modem be it Type-1 i.e. Are the consumers given a choice for selecting the brands or is it that we need to take what they give us.

sample page for comparison( some oldermodels 220BX etc )
    Virtual server/Port triggering etc
    http://i4.tinypic.com/5y2f8ds.jpg
NAT DMZ host ( BSNL model new )
    http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1301/...38bff75c_o.jpg

In virtual server you can specify which port to get traffic from which web site. This is useful when downloading torrents.

Do the customers get an option to pick their model ??
If taken on rent, can give some excuse to get it changed.
ONLY modem UT300R2U (new) seems to lack this
    NAT options.

from my experience in most cases you dont get to choose.. because bsnl hardly gets any modem stock.. and when they get the stock its probably the same model..and in bangalore especially i think all you get is ut300r2u .. this is the model which is abundantly available..the others exists but do go out of stock frequently..

    Default wa3002g4 to replace ut300r2u?

I have the 750 bsnl plan and am using the ut300r2u modem.
Since a few months my ports (for Vuze and Transmission) are closed after bsnl changed something in their system.
(getting extremely low speed max: 15kbs)
ut300r2u doesn't support virtual server (the best option for opening ports as I found out). Can someone who has wa300g4, tell me if this modem does support virtual server?
I've read many different comments (even some who say that the ut300r2u supports virtual server) and would like to know for sure if the wa3002g4 has this option.
I surfed the net, this forum and others and can't seem to find a good modem. And the wa3002g4 is available here where I live (a bit of a remote area)
I have an ethernet connection, I do not want wireless and I'm downloading a lot.
My operating system is Mac OS X.
And if someone knows a really good other modem that is easily available..... Please let me know.

    thanks for your quick replies.
At bsnl they never mentioned the rental option... I'll get some info on it. And if possible, I'll rent the modem.
    Will think about the firmware.

I see your DNS servers are different than mine. And I see those servers mentioned everywhere. Is it better for me to change it too?
And you edited your MAC. What is the reason and the benefit?

I mean: you changed something in your MAC.
What is the reason and benefit?

    The DNS are opendns.
MAC addresss:Usually blanked for privacy reasons.
Even if not edited, no harm in giving it.
Did you try the command for Virtual server.
    Feedback please.

yes, that is exactly what i do....
maybe a problem in the modem?

I think it's better to leave it for the moment.
I'll go and talk to the bsnl guy's for the rental of the other modem.
    See how that works out.

    Thanks for your help.

    Question

One question I need to ask....

With BSNL BB (for last 3 years), I was using their modem Huawei SmartAX MT882, but due to no reasons I bought a new ADSL modem (D-Link GLB-502T) from outside. It has been serving me very well until since last 5 months ago, there was a sudden drop of speed and frequent connectivity failure.

I thought it to be fault of the BSNL, gave them a call but they told me that all the line-parameters are showing okay at their end, may be the problem is with the modem. I bought another piece of the same model. But only after 1-2 days the problem recurred.

This time I went to their Divisional Engineer (Internal) and this time also he showed me that the line is okay.

I returned and suddenly thought to use the BSNL provided modem (which I wrapped up since long time). And man it was rocking...!!!

Later I did some search on Net and came to know that this D-Link router has several issues like:
    1. Heating issues (specially during the summer)
    2. Sudden disconnectivity (without any reasons)
    3. Disconnects even due to minimal power fluctuations.

However, I thought to purchase this Huawei modem from outside market but came to know that it will not be available, since they have tie-up only with the BSNL.

I am also using a Wireless router (LinkSys WRT54G) in conjunction with Huawei modem.

Can any one suggest me the best possible ADSL modem available in the market which will work under my setup?

Please don't suggest any modem which has inbuilt WiFi and router facilities. Also please don't suggest any model which is not available in India (particularly at Kolkata).

My use: Excessive download, Torrent, Mails, Online gaming, Social networking, and browsing.

You have to accept the truth that there is no special modem for ADSL. Everything depends on your Internet bandwidth and how you have configured your network depending on your needs.
Read here SKAPadmin.net Forum - Modem-Router-PC Network Setup

If you want to do excessive download, online gaming and other stuff, you need to design a setup that reduces unncessary traffic path and scanning. so in my view your router linksys is enough for your need.

BSNL modems are not bad as many feel. I suggest using one from BSNL. The cost is also very much low compared to open market. You need not buy modem from your own exchange/ circle. You can buy it from any BSNL section if you have a Landline (Please correct me if I am wrong).

To anyone wanting a modem, I will advise in going for BSNL provided Type IV modem such WA-3002-G4 or equivalent. Such modem/routers have 4 ethernet ports, wi-fi and at Rs. 1600/- it is a steal deal.

I didn't want wi-fi & router facilities in the modem... all I want is a plain but robust ADSL modem to use with BSNL Home UL900 plan.

Moreover, the modem which they have given me (Huawei SmartAX MT882) is also showing heating issues, and out-of-a-sudden it loses connectivity, then I have to close it and switch it on.... then it starts of fine...

    This procedure is really ridiculous!!!

Kindly note, I don't want any diplomatic answers. I have mentioned my usage, my plan, my connection. Moreover I already have a wifi router. The modem is creating a problem. Please suggest a good modem along with the model no.... (preferably with Rs. 4K to 5K). If possible u may share ur feedback, specially the negative ones with the modem...

It will be on for 20 hrs a day and 4 days a week....
