I left it alone because when I got the modem, I saw the max speed as 8192 which according to the specifications given with the modem is the max speed supported by it. So I figured it was all OK.

In fact I didn't have any other problem untill last two months. Since many people are getting connection now only in my area, I think their cables/systems may be overloaded.

What is odd is tat the upload speed has always been constant...

like u said in ur area lots of new subscribers added recently, there may be possibility of wiring was not properly done by bsnl linemen when giving new connections like they switch u on another port in their box which was having conductivity trouble, see this pic of a junction box and see how hundreds of wires are mangled with each other!!!

like u said ur UL is high, when i was getting disturbance UL crosses 25MbPS!!! and DL remains at 3MbPS but when trouble is sorted out DL was 22MbPS and UL was 5.5MbPS, if ur UL is abnormally high then there is trouble in ur network, DL must be greater than UL for proper connectivity.

and reliance uses these kinds of large cisco Ethernet switches to give connectivity, which are sealed in a large enclosure and cooled by fan for hot weather it costs 1.5-2 lakh each!!!

if i were at your place then i would have made bsnl life a living hell till the problem is sorted out, do one thing call their CC when they came at ur place go with them and see ur junction box and see where ur link is connected tell them to switch to other link and check ur speeds their is slight possibility that luckily u get the right link with more speeds!!!! with 0%loss.

Man u have over-estimated BSNL I guess. I can tell you this... their customer care has ABSOLUTELY NO TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE.

TILL NOW not even once has a customer representative ever called, let alone visit me... (well it might me coz most probably coz of general internet failure in my area, so might have not had any reason).

All they ask is if PPPoE indicator in modem is working.

Thats y i said i hav to go in person...

to trap the tiger we must put goat in cage ,when i was facing problem of slow line speed and packet loss, but my net was working fyne and wan light is on what I've done is called the CC and said my light went off and there is no connectivity that jerk CC executive done everything in his power to prove that problem is on my side like my pc and modem is not fine after 17mins of his talk he finally noted down the complaint and next day they come to rectify, usually u have to tell them that problem is severe and ur whole work is stopped etc to bring them on site for solution!!!

the actual thing is they never deny that there is a problem, but after registering the complaint no follow action is done..

the good thing in reliance is tat u can atleast email a top executive guy to get ur worrk done...

these are the symptoms of high congestion in network, anytime ur ping reply time must be steady.
