Did you get 14digit alphanumeric ID and password ?
    Ask Exchange.
See following link. My post No 5.
    http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...html#post82142 (Confusion)

What is the hurry in changing the password?
Only in your telephone line it can be used .

I am using the same ID and PW allotted by BSNL for past two years !

You are right the BB user Id and Password will work only on the telephone line to which the connection is alloted. But I would like to add a note, After the activation of a new connection ( user Id and Password only) it tooks at least 72 hours to get port binded to the telephone line. And during this time this particular user Id and password can be used from any tele line. THOUGH IT IS HIGHLY ILLEGAL.

I know about the port binding factor but in December when i have faced some strange problem that time i complained at local exchange DE and he told me to connect the BB from his pc using my account that time i can able to connect the BB by using my account from different phone line.

[that time my exact problem was when i connect BB no webpage was opening except one different BB portal page where only one message present that "you have crossed the 1 GB limit including night unlimited"]

certain phone lines at BSNL exchanges may have the access to even port bound IDs. even I have seen this. when asked, the exchange fellow gave some technical mumbo jumbo.

You are right. AT that moment The DE reset your port binding and thus you were able to connect using your user ID ans Pasword from that line and from others. But today you can not access your U-Id and Pwrd from other line as it is now port binded. Also for information purpose I am telling one more thing. the port binding process is completely computer aided and it is not mendatory that your paswrd and userid will bind to your line. it may bind to others line also. What happen genraly binds to the line from which it was much accessed during this 72 hours time. so keep your user id and passwrd confidential.

It depends on one major factor and i.e. Port binding ..................
if your BB connection is port binded i.e. your BB connection (which includes your Username and password ) is binded to your phone no. then no one else can use your BB connection if he is not connected via your telephone line(phone no.) ..............
otherwise if your connection is not Port binded then other's can use your connection via there telephone line as well provided if they know your username and password ........
but, these days around most of the connections are port-binded .......... and if it turns out to be that your connection is still not port-binded then it would be port-binded in the upcoming weeks ...............

No, it dose not takes 72 hours, the account will binded when the first time log in if the binded option is enable in the user's account.

There is no need for phone no for binded the account.

rightly said, The bb connection is binded to PORT not Telephone number, this port is the switch which connects your line & exchange terminal.

I came across this in last few days as my line was having problem and they changed the port in the exchange and i got DSL but started giving me error that Invalid User ID or Password, then i called net care and they told will remove the port binding after 5 min i was able to connect.

Yes, you are right, but there is something little bit more.
I know what kind of theory is being used for bind the account.
But I can not explain this because of GOVT issue.

    Default PORT binding Demystified.

    @Shubam July 27th 2007 ( from elsewhere)
Ok, not having anything better to do this afternoon, i
decided to learn exactly how"port binding" works. I am posting this for the benfit of others who might be interested. Its not too technical and you get a fairly good idea.

This is how UTstarcom(DSLAM equipment provider to BSNL) defines port-binding as( i think it calls it iSMART)
"Operator A offers both flat-fee DSL service to residential customers and to business customers such as Internet cafes.

All services are based on PPPoE authentication and utilize common B-RAS. To prevent residential customers from
using their home accounts at an Internet cafe, the operator has to bind the subscriber’s username and password to their
    home DSL port.
This way, residential DSL subscribers can use their logon information to gain Internet access at home, but not at an Internet café or at the home of another residential customer. In this application, the DSLAM is required
to insert home-port identity information along with the PPP authentication packet."

B-RAS stands for broadband remote access server. Its used to authenticate subscribers. And this is what UTStarcom says regarding the "home port" in the above para

"iSmart inserts home-port identity information into the PAP authentication packet and relays the information to the
PPPoE server. Home-port identity information includes the AN-2000 node ID as well as the shelf, slot and port index
of the home port. This information is inserted into the username field of the PAP authentication request.

    The operator
can provision the system to replace the original user name with home-port identity information, or to append the
home-port information in front of the original user name. Each DSL port can be independently provisioned to turn
iSmart on or off and, if turned on, to either replace the user name or append the home-port to the original user name"

The An-2000 is the DSLAM model number.Hope this helped you understanding port binding a little better.
