Default Broadband speed too low :(

I am using BSNL broadband 250 plan for the past 1.5 yrs. i have an ADSL 2mbps modem provided by BSNL. The promised speeds are 256kbps-2mbps. But i get only download speeds of only 10-15KBPS. Even my friends reliance card in college is faster than that. I live in a town(pudukkottai,TN) and my home is only 2kms from the BSNL district headquaters and have a ADSL2+ modem.. What could be the reason for this slow speed? Is it dependent on the server in the BSNL office?? The same plan in my friends home in coimbatore(TN) is able to get 160-200KBPS..
I have a dell inspiron E6400 series. It has a 1GBddr2 and core2duo 1.73GHz processor... wat could be the problem... my friend has a lesser config and older modem but still gets great performance in his place......
    Plz help me guys

    Please someone... some suggestions plz...

Since when you are experiencing this slow speed. Is it like this from the beginning?

You can use the tips from this forum, before that please register a complaint with BSNL. Hands on service is always an advantage.

Do you use torrent clients like utorrent? What is the speed you get with that?

Please mention your modem make & model

Kbps*8 makes KBPS [see the difference between "B"(bytes) and b(bits)]. Thus 15KBPS should be considered as 120Kbps.
please check whether your phone is noisy like hashing sound. Please check whether you have used the splitter given by BSNL. whether the output connections data and phone are connected to modem and the telephone instrument properly or any reversal is there.

Also more important to ensure that any additional telephone instruments like cordless etc are connected after the splitter at the phone point and NOT at the main line coming from BSNL. This will effect the speed of the modem in many cases.

ensure that these checks are made and any errors are corrected.

This will help to get better speed from your modem.
you may use Ethernet connector and not the USB connector(even if provided)

To reduce interference from TV etc, please do keep the PC and the related Modem wires away from TV and satellite decoders like DishTV etc.

Processor speed is nothing to do with your problem as it is (net connection speed) not dependent on that. There are so many useful threads in this forum regarding slow speeds, frequent disconnection, etc. Just try to find them. Just a simple advice to get quick and proper response from this forum, mention all the necessary details such as modem/router make/model, current modem statistics (may attach screen shot), etc. which (people from this forum required to know in order to help you) you can find from other posts in this forum.

If you are talking about torrents, then check that port is forwarded. Refer here: Torrents and Port Fowarding Guide

    1.) try open dns
2.) try downloading a file from download.com and see the speed
3.)see to that no one is using your connection .. like say a open wifi
4.)have u given the line thru splitter ? or direct ?
5.)post your snr value may be someone can help u rectify anything in snr..
6.) bsnl is crap.. me on 512 kbps , and my ping is so high .. so its really not a worthy ISP ... and place a complain...

Please mention your modem make & model ..............

You can access your modem configuration page by typing the following into your web-browser :-

    http://192.168.1.1/

then it would ask for you modem username and password which in most cases is admin .
    username: admin
    password: admin

after this you would be able to browse through your modem configuration pages ...........

NOTE:- please don't make any changes until and unless you are sure about as to what you are doing .

then after manually looking under various tab you will find your SNR and attenuation etc. under one of the tab's mentioned in the modem configuration page .............

Some modems support back up function for settings. Mine has (Nokia Siemens C2110). If your modem has one, make a backup before you do anything with it.

May be this will be of some help

    http://www.indiabroadband.net/broadb...and-guide.html (Basic Broadband Guide)

The incoming line should go to splitter, from where it is divided as voice and data lines. If you have two instruments (Phone), then the voice line should have another splitter which divides into two.

    @girishmotgi24

    (A)
Keep the main connection /adsl splitter1 /modem port
    (B)
From Phone Port RJ11===>> to 2 way Phone splitter====>> phone 1
Rj11 cable to the other room phone 2
    If not feasible.

    All Phones after ADSL splitter.
In Phone extension/s in other rooms Use Additional ADSL splitter for the phones.

Appears you have a home 750 256 Kbps tariff plan.
    confirm this.
Maximum speed possible 32 KB/sec ( *conditions apply)
update 0745 : My mistake. Sorry. your plan Home 250 OK. noted. .

Your SNR seems acceptable, but Attenuation can reduce.
    Check connections for blackening/oxidization etc.
    Try openDNs 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222.
Use only one and keep other BSNL DNS.
    feedback.
    Para two:
    Try TCP/IP optimizer from speedguide.net
Check speed before and after the tweaks at the same server
    say at speedtest.net Server Sydney.
( each test will use about 12 to 15 MB)

Also download Windows System Care from iobit.com
and clear your computer of unwanted data.
