    Default Packet Loss problem (Kolkata)

I've been getting moderate to severe packet loss on my BSNL broadband connection ? Anyone else experiencing similar issues ?

    Here's a representative ping dump from google.co.in :

check if that is only for that site or all sites... best is check you speed at speedtest.net & post it here with your plan details and SNR ratio too

Yes, it's for all sites; Speedtest.net works at times, fails at other times (it won't even connect to the latency or download test at times).

Lots of packet loss = slow/interrupted browsing.

Sometimes when it get really bad I try to reconnect to bsnl but I get the error message "the remote server is not responding".

plan details and SNR ratio too
    Home1000.
How do I check my SNR ratio ?

goto 192.168.1.1 type username & password as "admin" without quotes. there in the default page will get it... if not check page which is something as summery etc..

you will get full detail on ADSL page

What kind of SNR/attentuation is normal ?
I'm not really getting any disturbance on my phone line when I pick it up.
The problem started around 4 hours ago, it's usually never like this.

    Modem AX MT841.
    @rsen
    please report any further development.
Sudden problem means, some electrical/electronic/wireless/pick up in your location.

    Change Mod to GDMT and
see under summary any improvement in SNR/Attn

Will try some speed optimisers later.
    TTL value shown is high..

Yes select gdmt /t413/glite or multimode.
    Bitswap enabled.
    adsl2+ for high speed connections.

    Speed etc seems normal.
using the optimiser try recommended values.
    MTU/MSS/TTL etc are interrelated.

What connection speed should I choose on the slider ?
I'm currently using Home1000 and the download speed is typically somewhere between 1-1.5Mbps.

How do I change the DNS servers ?

I'm still getting some packet loss (it's quite random, with a few minutes with no packet loss 0-2%, and then a few minutes with heavier packet loss 4-6%)

Which dns server is best for online games and occasional streaming audio ?

Yeah BSNL definitely sucks but most broadband providers in India are terrible so there isn't really much to choose from, especially in Kolkata.

I would say internet settings do affect things since I remember tweaking a few settings made streaming audio and some online gaming a lot better.
e.g. changing TcpAckFrequency to 1 and TCPNoDelay to 1 [basically send ack for every tcp message and deactivating the Nagle algorithm to improve your ping]

    Hi RSen,

did changing the DNS server solve your problem ?

I am in Bangalore and facing the similar problem since I took BSNL broadband.
I changed the DNS but of no help.

    I have Huwai 3002G4 modem.
I am still have 3-10% packet loss at any given time duration. (with or without wire).
I have MS-Vista(home edition) on my HP laptop.
I searched a lot on net, complained with BSNL and from last 10 days no action from BSNL
    Any help will be appreciated.

I am also looking for other service provider in my area.

Check if the ping to 192.168.1.1 is ok

If it is, you may use opendns ip's 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220

Not really, the problem was almost certainly on the BSNL end and it cleared up in the next few days after I posted. Other than that some of the tools that others in this thread posted (essbebe mostly) were quite helpful.
You could try asking other people in your exchange if they have any packet loss issues.
In india broadband service is so terrible, unless you are a total noob of a user the problem is pretty much always on BSNL's end.

I'm still looking for a good dns server that might have a lower latency for online games.

    Default Problem sniffing packets.

What I am trying here is to sniff packets on my ADSL Dataone connection. I am using ethereal to sniff. It sniffs all packets directed to or from my IP but not for any other IP.

The problem to me seems to be cause my ADSL modem which acts as a router is blocking any packet not directd to my IP. Can I change the router setting of this ADSL modem provided by BSNL?

    thanks to all.

My ADSL light keeps going off after some time. And thats the reason ping fails.
I have tried so many permutation and combinations that I am planning to go for Photon, hope fully that would not have this problem. OR I will try Airtel.

I have MS-Vista(home edition) on my HP laptop.
    option 1 ; Disable IPV6 in TCP/IP properties page.

Option 2 ; In modem/router access control Page disable ADSL2+

    Option 3 :
    Download TCp/Ip/optimizer from
    speed guide.net and follow suggestions.

    Ref : WA3002-g4 manual etc.
    New Page 1

Option 4 : Change ISP. what is the assurance Packet loss will not happen?
