Default Net speed reduction after OS re-instl

hey i have been quite satisfied with my bsnl connection for over a year now.
due to some circumstances i was forced to reinstall my vista OS on my laptop.
after reinstalling the BSNL connection cd again i am now facing really bad dowload and internet surfing speeds as low as 1kbps.
can any one pls give me advice on what settings to change for my OS in order to get back my old speed.
Or the possible reasosn why the speed has slowed down.
PS: the speed i am getting on my PC is good its just my laptop which has vista that is showing troublw
    pls advice,
    regards

i think ur vista os is trying to update or some scheduled AV update is eating bandwidth i'm attaching DU meter just install du meter and see without using any net application ur bandwidth is utilizing or not, on idle mode it should be 0.0 kB up and 0.1 kB down

    Default speed check

    Test your internet speed at
    speedtest.net say Mumbai and Sydney
each test will use about 15 MB data.
if you have Unlimited plan test any time.
Else during free NU hours !

    All B/W meters show d/l u/l for a
    particular web site when surfing.

Speed shown by free download manager etc , when
downloading an application etc , more
indicative of the speed of your connection.
    It will not be constant.

yes i already have done the speedtest ant the site before posting here.
also i found turning of ipv6 or sometin like that in properties of my connection helped solve the problem to some extent now speeds have reached a decent 10kbps for normal downloads and surfing.

    speedtest.net shows UL:0.25MB/sec
    DL:0.3MB/sec
which i guess is the avg speed i should expect from my 256kbps unlimited plan
corrct me if i am wrong.

another discovery i made is that how is windows update able to dowload updates at constant speeds of 80kbps when all other apps are shut i mean i never get such speed when i download software, songs etc
are microsoft update servers so damn powerful that they r able to spare so much bandwithc for updates? really amazing it seems.(found this when i ran DU meter+update on my PC)

I would like to clear one thing that Kbps and KB/s are different things its Kilo bits per second and the latter one is Kilo bytes per second

So if your bandwidth is 256 Kbps and you are getting download speed of 80 Kbps then whats the problem its ok for your line

And yes one more thing try to configure your modem in G.dmt mode it will surely help a lot!

my problem is that the connection works fine on my PC with XP
but slows on my laptop with vista like i mentioned in my 1st post....so i am guessing its some network config on vista that is causin problems.

PS:want to add that my previous experience when modem is set to G.dmt mode is that my speeds were considerably reduced on my PC as compared to the speeds with ADSL and ADSL2+ enabled

    @black_orchid
In XP pro Sp3 ( I have this OS only )
start/ RUN / type cmd type ipconfig /all
    Post data
    For Vista similar command.
    Post data.

Para two : You may have to disable IPV6 in
TCP/IP properties page in Vista OS system.

    Mention modem/router you use.

that's what I'm saying dude u have to find culprit 40-60KBPS means ur bandwidth is utilizing handsomely, do one thing go to start>run>type msconfig and then go to start up mode disable all start up items

    vista-msconfig1.PNG

restart the os and then run du meter again and see the BW statistics.

there is a possibility that some virus is in ur system that is sending ur confidential data.

Do not un check Microsoft programs without knowing , its purpose. from the list.

It is easier to uncheck all resident programs appearing in the Task bar for test purposes.

use this program. select startup/applications etc.

Speed drop in vista is most likely caused due to the link-layer protocols. Try un checking them and the Qos scheduler in the Ethernet card's properties page.

You can use a firewall to block any unwanted programs accessing your internet connection. Click here to download Comodo Personal Firewall.

Does this really solve the problem?

because QOS Packet Scheduler is required to measure bandwidth and priorize traffic so disabling that may cause impact on streaming and voip applications.

I have not tried disabling it, but someone who have tried, can share their experience.

    and its my 4ooth post

Its true that QOS prioritize traffic for voip/streaming. But it makes sense to use this when

    1. You have priority for a specific service
    2. When you have a network congestion on your network

QOS is not a necessity. its just an optimizer. And moreover for a router to computer connection(LAN), enabling QOS has no added value. Enabling it on the WAN side might see some difference.
