This has happened with me before. It could be due to open joints in the telephone wiring. If the joints come in contact with water, this kind of things happen. If possible call your local lines man and ask him to check the wiring.

Be with him while he does the repair. By that you can make sure it won't happen again. Please reroute the wiring to the box and check for any inaccuracy.

It is natural that the modem/router heats up during summer. BTW, if you don't have A/c , ensure that the Modem/router is not concealed in a box like enclosure and there is adequate air circulation for the modem/router.

Mainly, please have a physical check that there are no joints in the telephone service lead coming to your venue from the pole/DP box of BSNL. if you fine joints, they would be main cause for the behavior you described after rain. Do contact the local BSNL personel and tell them that there are many joints and that you are suffering. As they told that many others of that area are suffering, there may ingress of water/moisture into the underground cable joint of BSNL.

additionally ensure that there are no additional telephones in your home especially before the splitter box. any such, should be shifted to after the splitter on the phone socket. this will ensure better functioning.
let us work for stabilizing the phone line before onset of monsoon.

Well, you only need to shutdown when frequent lightnings occur, irrespective of the rain, ......

.....and secondly you need to shutdown all electronics/electrical appliances, not everything :001_tt2:
If the lightning hits phone cables, then what to do, you would want to disconnect telephone wires, cause in that period you may miss out important calls. Also TV cables are succeptable to undergo same problems. The world is wired around you it (and wierd). Its very unpredictable.

You already know still, when there is a heavy rain with lightning, please disconnect the phone line from your splitter. Remove the plugs from the power socket, cables if you have a TV tuner card. The same applies for all electrical appliances.

Most UPS provide lightning protection. Still as we value these instruments it will be a better idea not to use them.

Use a surge protector while connecting power to your Laptop / modem.
Even during normal time, there are occational surges in the power line that can fry the electronic circuits.

That is not exactly possible every time
by the time you notice things would be damaged. Planned protection is the only way

you get 3 pin GD tubes and a terminating item called Rosette (around3X3") with built in protection. Talk to BSNL, JTO and try to get one installed in your home with a proper ground connection with thick copper wire. Local electrician can arrange a 4 feet GI pipe driven into ground and a connection picked up from its edge for the protection ground you need. For GOD's sake don't use the one used for power line.
