is your machine getting IP? post ip configuration details

when you open your web console of your modem (probably http://192.168.1.1), does it show internet connected status under DSL/ADSL?

Your OS is LINUX Modem/router siemens c 2110

Strange error: unless you tell the error message, not able to get a clue.

Please see this website and check the settings for an "ALWAYS ON "
connection. ( common for Windows and Linux )
    2. Start RUN type cmd type ipconfig /all
( find equivalent commands for LINUX)
    Post data.

    3. Start?network/LAN properties
    TCP/IP
    properties
    enter 192.168.1.10
    subnet 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.1.1

    DNS 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222
    SAVE apply.

IN Windows XP we create a LAN network for the ether net card.
    Start/all programs/accessories/ communications
    Network connection wizard.

In the same web site a link is also given for Linux users.
So some other user familiar with LINUX may have to guide you. ( probably @superprash 2003 will respond)

Please see this website and check the settings for an "ALWAYS ON "
connection. ( common for Windows and Linux )
open browser and type 192.168.1.1 etc

C2110 (Type-A) ADSL MODEM MULTIUSER CONFIGURATION

in windows, did you require to use a dialer to connect to the internet?? or did internet work as soon as your switched on your modem? .. Which linux distro are you running? post output of ifconfig from the terminal
