Question Port Forwarding in Complex SetUp

After going thru the "portforward.com", I could hardly find any tutorials which relate to step-by-step approach of setting up port forwarding in compound setup (e.g. in my home Network).

Can anyone throw some light on it in the form of step-by step tutorial?

BSNL main line -> SmartAX MT882 (configured in PPPoE) -> Linksys WRT54G

    There are three computers:
    1. A desktop with wired access to WRT54G
    2. A desktop (wifi enabled) wireless access to the WRT54G
    3. A laptop wireless access to Net thru WRT54G.

If I need to forward port for U-torrent on every machine, how to do that? By the way, the SmartAX web setup page can be accessed from any machine by typing 192.168.1.1 from the browser.

    The ip address of
    WRT54G is 192.168.2.1
    Laptop IPv4 (Vista) is 192.168.2.101
Desktop 1 (XP Pro) is 192.168.2.100
Desktop 2 (XP Pro) is 192.168.2.102

U-torrent is installed on all of the machine. Now how to forward port for all. In the "portforwarding portal" they have mentioned about some static ip. Now how to get that.

Please help... the download speed of U-torrent sucks in all the three...

u-torrent uses constant port to be forwarded to your system. so you can configure port-forward for only one system unless ports are different and you have multiple public IPs.

If you are hosting different services, then atleast we can try other options to forward requests. But you want to run same utorrent in all machines..so its not possible.

    Dear "skap",

Can u be kindly less technical? What I interpreted, u meant to say - precisely port-forwading is not possible in my setup. I will be doomed man....

At least, guide me if I can forward port for the desktop #1 (wired). In this machine, U-Torrent uses this port 27129. Now kindly give a step-by-step approach... in my set-up...

Some other way to test is
    * if your service provider allows you to dial multiple PPPOE connections, then you can configure your modem in bridge mode and configure all your computers to dial PPPOE connection. This way all 3 of your computers receive independent public IPs and thus your issue will be solved.

But does service provider allow multiple PPPOE connections?

oh! port-forwarding is not possible because while configuring in modem, we specifically mention your computer IP 192.168.2.101 to do port forward for 27129. So other computers cannot be configured for same port.

So if you want to make utorrent work in all three computers, either
    1. you have to change utorrent port for other 2 computers say 27130 & 27131 or
    2. you have to get three public ips from your service provider.

Option 1 may cause utorrent work abnormally.

    is it clear now?

    @sou_1234321

    Please do the following:

    a) Setup MT882 modem in PPPoE mode. I assume that the IP address of this modem is 192.168.1.1.

    b) Setup WRT54G in Automatic DHCP (aka Bridge mode). I assume that the IP address of this router is 192.168.2.1.

    c) If you have "Virtual Server" option on MT882, then set the entries as follows:
    IP: 192.168.2.1
    Port Range: 1024 to 31767

    d) If the MT882 does not provide "Virtual Server" option, then use the NAT/DMZ option. Enter 192.168.2.1 in the NAT/DMZ.

Please reply whether this works or not. Thanks.

can you post port forwarding screenshot of your modem? it helps me to fill the columns exactly.

oh! just4kix is so fast. follow what he said...if any trouble...post screenshot.

i am not sure of what port does utorrent use. but u must choose TCP & UDP

Okay, forget the other two computers (I shall not use U-torrent anymore on those two....)

Suppose I want to forward port in the desktop #1 only and the port no. remains the same i.e. 27129, now kindly help me out to configure it properly... I mean a step-by-step...

What's a static IP, in context of port-forwarding, which has been mentioned in the portforward.com (click HERE to go straight to that page.)

    Awaiting a favourable guidance...

    1. choose virtual server
    2. check "enabled" option in status
    3. Enter any name representing your configuration detail say "utorrent_rule" in name box
    4. In private IP, enter your computer IP address say "192.168.2.101"
    5. Choose protocol type as "TCP/UDP"

    6. Private port as "
    27129
" (i am not sure abt utorrent ports)
    7. Public port as "27129"
    8. Choose schedule as "always"

Ya, I know that there is detailed guide on that particularly with my model of Modem. But what I couldn't understand is this one (quoting from the site):

To setup port forwarding on this router your computer needs to have a static ip address. Take a look at our Static IP Address guide to setup a static ip address. When you are finished setting up a static ip address, please come back to this page and enter the ip address you setup in the Static IP Address box below.
    Do not skip this step!
Please enter the static ip you want to forward to:

here what they mean is "to set static IP address to your computer". say if your computer gets IP address automatically from modem/router and at first time it assigns 192.168.2.101, there are chances that when defined time in modem expires, modem/router may assign different IP which is free say 192.168.2.150.

But you have configured in your modem/router that utorrent traffic should be directed to 192.168.2.101 but now, that machine has different IP (192.168.2.150). obviously utorrent fails!!!

To avoid this, your computer must have a fixed (static) IP address

I hope u guys are using advanced Firmware version of Huawei's SmartAX MT882, because mine is too old! It's:
    V200R001C01B021SP03
    Jun 20 2005

And yes there is no option to forward port thru NAT option, I have to go thru virtual servers menu...

Doubt cleared....! That implies I have to manually enter those datas (IP add, Subnet, default gateway, blah-blah). Then let me do it (on the desktop which wired to WRT54G)... This is what I have entered in my Control Panel -> Network Connection -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> TCP/IP...

    IP address: 192.168.2.100
    Subnet mask:255.255.255.0
    Default gateway:192.168.2.1

    Preferred DNS:192.168.2.1
    Alternate DNS:192.168.3.1

    Now what to do?

I have also attached the Port forward page setup of my modem...

what is this 3.1? it must be 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1(modem)

after making changes, make sure internet works as usual!!

By God's grace my network is just rocking Except the U-torrent...

However, I don't know why it's 3.1; And what exactly it should be??

And b'coz it was not taking either 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1; hence i tried with 3.1... and it's finally working...!!!! Thanks to Bill Gates...! Sometimes crooked and illegitimate things work in Windows only by the grace of Bill...

3.1 doesnt make any sense here....remove that...i wrongly posted in my previous post, it might be your modem IP (192.168.1.1) and cannot be 192.168.2.1...because u already entered it as Primary DNS

now remove that 192.168.3.1...no use at all

what do you get in utorrent?

what do you get in utorrent?
Then what to enter in the Alernate DNS field? Or I shud keep it blank?

The U-torrent is still showing that irritating exclamation mark in its status bar which implies: "No incoming connections. Unless the icon turns green, it could indicate a problem with ur network configuration"

By the way, have u seen the screenshot of the virtual server page which I have attached? Any help will be obliging...

You could have just followed the guides in PortForward itself for easy setup.

    1) To setup a Static IP Address
Select your Operating System and follow the guide: PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

    2) Port Forwarding for Huawei SmartAX MT882
Follow this guide: Port Forwarding for the Huawei SmartAX MT882

Both of the guides are easy to follow, and that would help you to setup everyhting yourself.

    Forgive my ignorance...

Religiously followed what has been mentioned in the port forward site, but no luck... I am still waiting for the status bar icon (of U-Torrent) to turn green....
