Default Modem and Router Issue.

Plan: Home 1350UL
Modem: SmartAx MT 880.
Routers: Motorala VT2542-VD

Setup Details:
Modem is in bridged mode. Modem is connected to the Motorola router which dials modem through PPPoE setting.

Problem: When the link goes down on the modem, I won’t get the internet until I restart the modem (Once the link is available) or reconnect the router to the modem from the admin screens of router again.

Description: When I switch on the Modem and the Router for first time, the router dials the modem through the PPPoE and the router gets connection showing the status as connected.

Now when the link goes off in the modem, the internet goes away but the router maintains the connection status as connected and won’t redial the modem even when the link on modem goes away and comes back later.

So even the link comes back on the modem, it won’t be dialed once disconnected and the Internet won’t be available until the router or the modem is restarted as the router again reconnects.

"" Is there a solution to this problem????""

Do I need to reconfigure the modem to PPPoE instead of Bridged mode?

Any clues??

Thanks for the help in advance.

You have to click the Note Icon. ( similar modem )
When modem switched on;
when internet gets disconnected
when resume after power off etc.

I could not get solution for this.
I use PPP/PPPoE mode.

I have not attempted FW upgrade:
Model Name MT882 Firmware Version V200R001C01B021SP03
Jun 20 2005

essbebe,
Taking your advice, i checked for the note icon and founf nothing in my settings. Then, i upgraded the firmware thinking that, it will give me the option for notes. But it gave me no option for that.

Seems like this modem (2004 made) is very old giving me no options to solve the issue??

Attached is the summary of the modem. Please comment on the SNR and ATTN values also.

Your SNR/ Attn data acceptable.
Try with MOD mode GDMT.
Attn if reduced better.

Probably the browser you use is not IE7 or IE8.
I cannot connect in FF and use IE8 or opera.
After getting connected I switch over to FireFox.
Also you connect in "Bridged" mode.
My problem is in PPP/PPPoE mode.
No use.
Please wait for other user's inputs.

192.168.1.1/hwhtml/null.html for "NOTE" icon.

see this: I have to click the "Note" icon
for PVC4 for Airtel. after enabling it again in WAN page.
( Change only the Rj11 to Telephone ports)

Try with a different ADSL modem.

My new observation:
I replaced the motorola router with Linksys 54G and now, the problem is different.

With Motorola, if i loose link on the modem, I was needed to restart the router or diconnect and connect again using the router's admin page.

Now with LinkSys, unlike Motorola, it says connection diconnected in the admin page once the link goes off on the modem. But it wont reconnect even when link is avilable, even when I try to reconnect through the LinkSys Admin Page. Restarting the router wont help either. But once I power cycle the Modem, everything again works. So now, I am power cycling the modem each time link goes and comes back again. This became a pain as it happens 3 to 4 times a day in 24 hours (I keep the modem and router on for 24 hours and I handle the heat with a small 12v computer fan).

My problem is, I can not powercycle the modem/router as they are in upstairs while I work in the downstairs during morning time.

essbebe,
As you adviced, I changed to GDMT and it lowered my ATTN up to 10db and thanks for that.

For this connection/disconnection problem, do you think I need to change the modem?? if so, any model suggestion ? All I want is stable connection and no human involment like power cycleing, connect using admin page etc, when link goes off and comes back again.

Thanks for help
Srikar.

The disconnection problem appears to be solved as of now after watching for 3 days. While I don’t know much about the GDMT and ADSL2+ modes, apparently, GDMT is not working with the Linksys WRT54G as expected but ADSL2+ is working fine.

Now with the MT 880 on ADSL2+ and Linksys WRT54G is working without issues of disconnection and also auto redial problems.
From last 3 days, it is stable enough as the router auto connects even when the link goes and comes back on modem. So I need not power cycle (modem/router) or connect back using router’s settings pages.

I wish the GDMT work with the Linksys as it gives me additional SNR/ Decrease Attn over the ADSL2+, but as of now GDMT is not stable with Linksys. May be it is router specific as my Motorola and Linksys routers behaved in 2 different ways with modem MT 880.
Thanks for all who helped me.
