    Question Power cycling a router??

    Hey guys, I've changed to "Home 1000" plan recently. I had made all the settings for my bittorrent client to start at 2.am and turn off at 8.am. Had also made telnet scripts for rebooting my router every 23 minutes so that it doesn't die and my downloading is not stopped for the rest of the night.
    But for the 5 days i had the plan i got download only one day.
    I recorded my download rates for the night using a recorder and i found that my internet turns off instantly at 2.17 am and there is almost no download after that since once my router dies i can't reboot it using telnet. (i can't connect to my router after it dies)
    Then after some time downloading starts and remains for 2-3 minutes and then internet goes off instantly again. This goes on through out the night.
    I am totally confused with this weird pattern.
    But one thing i can say is that BSNL has something to do with these internet cuts
    So the only hope left for me is manual reboots and not sleeping for the night.
    Or it would a great help if anyone could tell me how can i turn my router off-on after regular intervals using some power timer or such equipment which can control the power to my router.
    Can i find such equipment in a regular electric store.

    Thnx for the link but
    i don't see how the software is going to do anything different than what i already do.
    It uses software to reboot router which is ineffective once the router dies.
    It says "It can try to maintain connectivity". I don't know how it will do that but i'll try the software to check just that.

    Any suggestions with the power timers??

    You do not need to reboot the modem every 23 minutes. Just reboot twice - once a few minutes after 2 AM and next a few minutes before 8 AM.

    Besides the link provided by meetdilip, check this thread: Automatic rebooting of router at 2 AM and 8 AM

    If your router disconnects after some time, there could be other issues such as:

    • Problem with the telephone line
    • No having a splitter at the first entry point
    • Modem over heating

    i have faced the very same problem i.e. the router becoming non-responsive ............
    once that happens the router doesn't respond to telnet or not even cannot be accessed via a web-browser then to get it back it needs to be manually restarted by switching off and ON.
    but sorry i have yet to find out a way to overcome this problem ............
    but would you please mention your router model no. as well your operating system details .........
    while my modem type is ZTE ZXDSL 831AII and operating system is VISTA .........

    I was having this kind of problem earlier.. but since i have started using the "connectivity" feature of "Imran's Broadband Helper Utility".. this problem has got solved for me.

    Code:
    This is the fragment of log from the utility:-

    sry for late reply
    @superprash, Mostly when i use P2P router dies after some time. But it's not any regular pattern(which is the main problem). Router may remain active for hours or it may die in an hour or so
    @limpu.cool
    I used the s/w for last night, the log was quite small, only one attempt to reboot modem due to no connectivity at bout 3.am. The strange thing is that when i checked my bandwidth recorder there was no download or no connectivity after 4am, but there was not a single attempt by the software to reboot modem during that time. Also i had scheduled reboots after regular intervals but non of the reboots were attempted by the software.
    The good thing is that i had full-on connectivity from 2.am to 4a.m
    I have changed my modem and got a beetel 220bx from my bro.
    Let's see if it makes any difference

    The s/w will only work when you "check" "use this service" under appropriate tabs.
    i.e
    "use Modem Reboot Service" under Modem tab.
    "use Connectivity Service" under Connectivity tab.
    etc.....

    (could you post the last night log & the reboot script you are using)

    @limpu
    Sry deleted it, but there wasn't anything of use in it i am sure since the s/w didn't do anything after 3am. Also i did chose the right tabs
    @meetdilip

    Good news guys, the modem change just worked perfectly. i got full non-stop connectivity and avg. dwnld. speed of 180kbps.
    Anyone suffering with the same problem that i was, i would recommend him a modem change, maybe get a "beetel 220bx" like i did
    I'll see how the modem works for the next few days and then post the results.
    Cheers mates
