    Default Connection Drops on WiFi

    Hi folks,

I have a DLink 802C ADSL modem and a PRONET PN-54WRT wifi router. I have linked both of them (DHCP is disabled on the wifi router - I guess its called the bridge mode). I am able to access the net but only for limited time. After that the wifi stops responding on both my laptops. But when I connect thru a Ethernet cable to the modem or the router, I can access the net. Please advice. I guess it is some kind of timeout mechanism. The wifi connection drops after about 25-30mins.

I am a lil slow on tech. Please help me on this.

    Thanks.

ensure that you are close to the router....it shouldn't time out... does this timeout occur when there is an active wired connection to the router?

The time out happens only when i m on the wifi... There is no issue with the signal strength, it stays at 100% - am in the same room as the wifi router..

    Thumbs up

i worked with a Call center servicing issues such as yours.

ensure these points before you start the modem and the router: -
    1) keep your DSL modem and wiFi Router away from TV (and CRT monitor)
    2) keep your DSL modem and wiFi Routeraway from microwave ovens
    3) keep your DSL modem and wiFi Router away from cordless phones (base and units)
    4) ensure no other wifi hotspot near your area.
    5) i seem to think that bridge modem and DHCP (Dynamic Host Config Protocol) are separate. ensure DHCP is switched on, and bridge mode is activated, on the router.
    6) if the router has option to enter your dsl user name and password, then you need to bridge the modem, and use the connection system of the modem. this is more stable. currently you must be using the connection system of the modem, and router is in bridge mode.

then turn off your modem, wifi router, and computer in any order.
wait for a minute, then start them in the order given below: -
    1) turn on the modem. all lights except the lan light will turn on after a while.
    2) after modem lights have stabilized, start up the wifi router. the LAN light should light up on the modem.
    3) after lights on the router are stable, boot up ur computer. you should be good to go.

    remember this: -
    1) when u use the connection system (pppoe) from modem, the router acts like a dumb ethernet hub. wifi is known to cause issues in this configuration.
    2) when you disable the pppoe mode (disabling this is called as bridging the modem), and connect thru the pppoe on the router, your router gains master rights (control) over the connection, and can administer this, and share it pretty well.
    3) the d-link modem, and the pronet wifi router are of same class (routers) and thus have same ip addresses (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)
try to change your router's host ip to say: - 10.0.0.1
then goto: - Start >> run >> CMD >> and enter the following command
    netsh int ip reset reset.txt
    <<hit enter>>
    and
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    <<hit enter>>

you will be prompted to restart your computer. refer to the powercycling method mentioned above. perform that.

netherwinterknights great post mate and repo added

I am not sure if winsock can help in this and i think there is some problem with router which is interrupting you wireless connection.

Please check if there is anything like Microwave, cordless phone, LCD or big TV screen near to your router.

If it happens next time then just try to restart your router once and see if it works or not.

    Unhappy

    @nwk nice explanation!
I'm having the same problem (with a twist - see red text). Using BSNL's type 2 modem (huawei wa1003a) and laptop with intel proset 2200b/g wireless.

I use it to connect to my company's vpn. Every 15-20 mins the connection drops and vpn disconnects.

This used to happen a year ago, I would change the channel or the ssid or both and it would be ok.

Now, without any change in my setup (except for a bunch of new wireless connections in my area) the problem has reoccured and not going away.

I used NetStumbler to find the channels - there are 6-8 connections in my area, most on 11, few on 6. I use channel 10 or 13. There is no difference. I changed my ssid, now I have kept the ssid hidden also. Still no change.

    I tried 80211b, g, b and g/mixed mode etc but no difference.

It shows excellent signal quality (the router is right above my laptop), but speed starts off at 54mbps then degrades to 1 or 2 and then drops for a while seconds.
I was using windows' wireless manager, now switched to the latest version intel proset wireless manager - no change at all.
I get a perfect connection using LAN (on my desktop) - no drops or lag.

The thing to note here is this - and I find it shocking since I never read this in any forum/site -
    1) In NetStumbler against my ssid - I see 2 channels, 13,1 and it switches to 1,13 or 13+,1 or 13*,1 all the time - it keeps jumping (indicated by the numerical ID going bold)
    2) When the connection drops - my ssid CHANGES to "Airtel G04" (yeah, I can't believe it!) and that is also on the same 13,1 channels - but I cant connect to it and use it - the signal strength is also low when it shows this. Then after 2 minutes it comes back to original ssid and reconnects automatically.

I have no idea where to start fixing this - it's driving me nuts!
    Please suggest something!
