I have been using type IV modem for last 3 years. Recently I shifted to Airtel and set aside Airtel Beetel modem and configured myself UtStarcom type IV modem (4 ethernet + Wifi) for Airtel. I purchased this modem from BSNL.

I am quite happy with performance of this modem. Its range also very good. I can surf internet quite far. Basic things you need to care of enable WEP encryption with strong password.

What not to buy:

I used a Siemens C2110 type I modem which came with my BB connection from February 2008, but it stopped working last month, and when I contacted the telephone company, they said it was out of their hands!. So I can't recommend this particular model. Please ask beforehand for their terms of warranty before you go for any make from BSNL.

WEP is quite easily breakable, instead use WPA or WPA2...

Earlier there were Type 2 and Type 4 modems. At that time Type 2 had only 2 ethernet ports and Type 4 has 4 ports. Now BSNL has changed this classification and now there is only Type 1 and Type 2 modem. And type 2 modems have 4 ports.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

i think u r right. In application form they just give two options Type 1 & 2.
In bsnl web they r showing as type 1,2,3&4. type 1&3 r normal modems then type 3&4 r wify modems that what the doubt was come. again one more doubt type 3 modem have 3 ports without wify right !!??

sorry brother Bsnl is better. because i use Reliance Net connect for 2 months 1099 per month for unlimited plan. last day of second month i use that ******* modem and they told nest day u have a minus balance of Rs 3680. i file a complaint ageist that fuckers and from there i got 5000 Rs compensation.
But in BSNL every day i am checking my usage and in 500 plan i am using more than 100GB per month U dont get 100Gb with ******* reliance if u work with 1 yer

i can easly get 4.8-5.1 GB per day by schedule downloads in IDM. Also using rapidshare account for downloading i download only 20-25 days we will get 150 GB easly if we use every day
