    Unhappy New BroadBand Connection

I got my net connection( 256 k unlimited plan, UL900plus) from bsnl.
They came installed a moden (ZTE ZXDSL 831 Modem ) but internet didn't worked. Then
the guy took the modem and configured it and said that no password and username
is required because it is unlimited plan, just go & connect.
Trouble is i am unable to connect to the net. Its showing connected but no page is opening.
Also when the modem is on, the red light(power) as well as the green light(PC/USB) is on
and the DSL light(amber) is also on & internet light is not glowing.
The modem is connected to the ethernet port of the computer
Any idea what to do to get online ?? Modem setting are wrongly configured by the guy??

They should give you the username and password. As you have taken UL plan they might have configured it "Always on" mode which connects to Internet as soon as the modem is powered on.

Goto cmd from run then type ipconfig/ all and post the screen shot here and will guide you with rest of the process.

By the way the DSL light should be green not Amber. please confirm it

    i dont use bsnl

but i think some ports needs to be changed, than you will be able to get online..

actually the internet is cnnected but due to port problem, the net is not switching to the gateway..

    @kk

oh yes i forgot that,, they must give him username and password too...

and also do check the default dns settngs for bsnl...

Mode is "Always on" as commented you said.
I will ask them for username and password.
Currently i am not able to post the screen shot for e ipconfig/ all as that system is not reachable, but i can give you information if you are particularly looking if you can give me some detail of it.

ok dont worry before asking them we only will retrieve it.

now right click on "My Network Places", properties
right click on "Local Area Connection", properties
now in General Tab goto TCP/IP and click properties

    now configure it as discribed

    IP Address :192.168.1.10
    Subnet Mask :255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway :192.168.1.1

    Prefered DNS Server : 208.67.222.222
    Alternate DNS server : 208.67.220.220

    ok, apply and come out

now you should be able to connect to internet

now in your browser (ex: Internet explorer) type 192.168.1.1
when asked for username and password type "admin" for both without quotes
there on the left panel it goto advanced setup, WAN there will be connection called PPPoE in that connection your username will be there the password will be default ie "password" without quotes.

Call your local exchange, ask for

Portal ID, User name, Password and email ID. You may need them at different points to keep yourselves safe from fancies of BSNL employees.

To avoid excess billing, try this

4 Ways to Check BSNL Broadband Usage

If you are not sure, please do not change any modem settings.
