    Default DNS Server?

I once had a problem and BSNL gave me new values. They gave the DNS servers as 85.255.112.39 and 40. Are these the best or should I use something else because I am getting slow torrent speeds since I changed that.

Your DNS servers don't have a hand in your downloading speeds (for both http and torrent downloads). Changing of DNS servers has effects only on your browsing.

Anyway, you may switch to OpenDNS (many prefer it over the default DNS servers) if you want to.
    OpenDNS

But, please note that it won't have any effect on your downloading speed. Your torrent speeds might be effected because your port is not forwarded properly, or the torrent might not be having a good seed-to-peer ratio.

BSNL Customer service gave me those DNS. But I used to get 200+KBps in torrents, but now I mostly get less than 100. I have Nokia Siemens C2110.

You can leave DNS to be automatic. This way it will default to (real and actual) BSNL DNS servers.

Or you can switch to OpenDNS as mentioned in earlier posts.

Also as said above, the role of DNS is to resolve URL to IP address. The quicker this is done, the faster the page will load. But DNS does not speed up downloads of any type.

I typed with spaces because it won't accept URL links since i have less than 15 posts. Nokia Siemens C2110. And DNS Servers are shown as 85.255.112.39 and 40.

if you give the link as given by me ,
it is easy to copy and paste and
change hxxp to http instead of
editing the extra spaces you gave.

presume the DNS appears in the modem.
follow the advice given by @just4Kix
( make anote of these DNS if you want to revert )

then post the data ipconfig /all .
    CLICK "Go Advanced"
    Additional Options
    Attach files
    Manage Attachments

For torrent, check the bottom part of utorrent to find whether the port is forwarded or not. If forwarded, you will find a green tick. Your firewall may have reset your values that there is some problem with opening ports. It happened to me once.

    Try this

    http://www.indiabroadband.net/broadb...ing-guide.html

If you are still facing problems, change the values as shown here

http://www.indiabroadband.net/broadb...nectivity.html (How to repair - Limited or No connectivity)

    Open DNS

As Just4kix mentioned, you can simply change to select DNS automatically and try.

Open DNS changes my search settings and tampers with my browser, so I changed to BSNL DNS. I tried all I could to set up port forwarding, but no luck. It does show a green tick. One night, I downloaded 3GB in 4hrs. All other nights, I get slow speeds.

Enable Upnp in utorrent. CTRL + P will take you to the preferences. I haven't port forwarded but can get full speed with Upnp. But it is not safe, better rely on port forwarding.

    Thanks for the info.
Please post your ipconfig /all data.
and please give details of the modem/router used.

    From Post No 6.

    4. Another explanation,
    why different DNS are tried/used.
A DNS sever is where the computer goes to translate a web address that you type in into a series of numbers and goes to that address.

So basically you type www.geekstogo.com into Internet Explorer (or any other web browser, it works in exactly the same way). The browser goes to a DNS server either you've specified or it has been given. It converts geekstogo.com into a series of numbers, in this case 72.232.135.12 and goes there.

When you specify DNS servers in the fashion you have, this is the order they're referred to when looking up IP addresses. Basically you go to a web site, the computer asks (in your case) the server at 208.67.222.222 for the proper number. If this server doesn't give a number (for example because its overloaded with requests or offline or generally not working) then the computer will ask the server at 208.67.220.220 for the site's IP. Then it just claims there is no page to find.

You can add as many DNS servers as you like, the computer will just work its way down the list trying to find a requested site's proper address before timing out. A common scenario when connected to a provider is that the provider is so busy with its user-base the DNS servers get overloaded. So you can connect but you can't go anywhere.

port forwarding has nothing to do with opendns.. since you see a green tick mark it means the required port is open..

You need port forwarding. Simply go portforward.com and select your modem. Select the default guide. Do remember to configure a static IP. You will find step by step procedure with screen shots. If facing problems, please report here.
