Same problem, as naveen and others said it's intermittent; and what you basically see is:

    1) Fluctuating latency
    2) Fluctuating ping travel times
    3) Lost packets

It doesn't happen all the time. Also, if you run a traceroute it appears that bsnl is using different routing at different times i.e. at some times they use airtel servers, then vsnl, then reliance so on and so forth.
Right now I'm getting a steady 39-42ms to yahoo.co.in with little packet loss.
Earlier in the morning (around 11-12) i was getting anywhere between 50-200.

BSNL seriously needs to fix their **** and their retarded routing.

The problem is almost certainly *not* on the user end so repair connection/open dns won't do anything.
In fact, I don't even understand why open dns would actually ever be useful, sorry.

Changing MTU size won't fix any of these problems, just fyi.

    Meetdilip:

You posted these 2 dns servers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
What is so special about these and where did you find out about them ?

Hi me too from Kolkata . I have been very satisfied with BSNL services. They do create problems sometimes but the value is unbeatable. Its only 2-3 months that this strange problem has been acting up. I have switched to open dns today , lets c what happens next.

    @rsen

I switched to Opens DNS during Conficker virus threat. It was offering some services that block conficker websites. Many in this forum used to refer this as a solution for BSNL connection problems. At times, it has yielded result. It is worth trying. You can switch back if you face any problem.

PS: Many other members of this forum also recommend Open DNS. Please search, you will find a few.

    EXACTLY

    EXACTLY

each time i run a traceroute.. i find its passing thru different routers...

once i found was totally different .. somewhere on the other side of the world.. ( US ) i dont know how but it passwed thru it... no VSNL or AIRTEL routers...

why is India`s BACKBONE is routing thru private servers ?

    why? could anyone explain ?

when u try to figure ur ip , it comes up as " BSNL - INDIA BACKBONE "

but we know it doesnt route its bandwidth thru thier server...

    this is sh!t...

and u know the most f()cking thing is

    --- when i connect to a mumbai multiplayer server i get pings 300 +
--- when i connect to malysian / japan server i get <200 Ping ....WTF ?

    purely WTF ?

with a 512 kbps connection i cant play a good multiplayer online game..

and regarding opendns thnks rsen .. many here come up with a standard answer of " USE OPENDNS " .... WTH ?

    anyway any solution rsen ?

    naveen :
My internet seems to have gotten a little better for the last few days.
I have tried opendns it's sort of ok; but chances are your latency will actually go up slightly.
My pings to US servers are still **** ~400-600ms.

Open dns is basically an independant 3rd party company that provides free dns services to anyone. All you have to do is to use their IP address.

    * 208.67.222.222 (resolver1.opendns.com)
    * 208.67.220.220 (resolver2.opendns.com)

Basically in your network connection go to tcp/ip settings and set these 2 as your preferred dns server (instead of automatically figuring it out; which is default btw)

OpenDNS | Providing A Safer And Faster Internet
OpenDNS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What I'm doing right now is setting up 2 connections in my networks - 1 with opendns and one without.

Remember though that opendns will block a *lot* of sites, recently they blocked a ton of gaming websites which kinda sucks.

Playing online multiplayer games is pretty awful in India, somethings are probably just not meant for poor countries like ours

Most US servers will give you a latency of 400-600ms
Most EU servers will give you a latency of 250-400ms

There are very few Asian servers anyway and most require an asian(i.e. chinese/korean/japanese) version of the game.

First person shooters are simply unplayable with anything more than 200ms.
You can probably play mmorpgs, but don't expect to get into a good raiding/pvp guild with such an unreliable and laggy connection.

On top of all this, which is the *ideal* situation in India, there are horrible fluctuations in latency/ping times and line drops, faults, malfunctions etc.
And of course if all else fails there are power cuts.

There's a reason gaming is barely beyond it's infancy in India, and online gaming is all but non-existent.

But we Indians always like to be smug and extremely optimisitc, so *ONE DAY* we will get true broadband and all our problems will get solved. Sadly this probably won't ever happen in our lifetime.

there was no discussion on OPEN DNS before.. nice people do know OPEN DNS...
dns servers are used to resolve the url so.. using bsnl server will cause time delay..
and use a proper browser.. a bad browser can hurt u..
