    Default always exceeding 2.5GB nowadays

guys I am just not able to find an explanation for this. I am using bsnl home 500 plan (night unlimited). Nowadays even though we at home use the internet just for normal surfing and occassional downloads, hearing to songs via online-players, and very rarely youtube videos, yet the datafox bandwidth meter is rushing past the 2.5GB mark before even the month is over.

If am a download-savvy, then I wouldn't be surprised by that. But for very minimal usage and ordinary surfing why is this happening? I have already done a thorough troubleshooting but could find no solution.

(all live updates are turned off that could up the b/w meter by downloading silently in the background)
(I did some changes in the ip:config page of firefox to optimise the browsing recently but since that brought no changes I reverted back to the old default settings)
(reinstalled firefox thrice still no change)

The datafox meter is just rising like mercury for every net session. Very soon even for this month it'll cross 2.5GB mark am sure...

Pls help me out from this mess..

It can be very likely due to virus. It is quite common that you consume about 100 - 150 MB per hour if you are infected. Do not wait for datafox. Most of us use a bandwidth meter which independently calculates the usage on real time basis.ie, you can know the usage as and when you use it even before it is seen in datafox. Click here to download.

    Other possibilities :

    1. If you do not use a dialler and can connect to internet just by switching on the modem, switch off the modem after use.

    2. Listening to music online is not considered as general surfing. It may consume a good amount of bandwidth.

    telnet 10.240.144.195 13

Run this in Command Prompt (Enable telnet in windows feature)

This could give you the exact BSNLtime.

Schedule accordingly for your night Unlimited

yes I have adsl modem with a wireless antenna. I access the internet wirelessly via my laptop. Yes I had my suspicions regarding virus. So I have removed Avire and installed MCafee antivirus and done a system scan just now.

And I'll check up the bandwidth meter given in this thread and get back as soon as possible reg feedback on this topic..

If you use a local bandwidth meter, check the recorded values with the BSNL data values. Each and every entry. They are likely to differ by a small value, thats acceptable.

If you find major differences, then its possible that someone else maybe using your connection, made easier , since its wireless.

I hate to contradict everyone, but somehow I feel that watching youtube videos and listening to songs is more than enough to complete your 2.5gb quota.
Let's see how you use your internet:

    • normal surfing : 20mb/day atleast
      • monthly 600mb +
    • occassional downloads : 100mb/week atleast
      • monthly 400mb
    • hearing to songs via online-players: 4mb/song atleast
      • if you listen to 10songs/day : 40mb/day
      • monthly 1.2 gb
      • PLUS the size of various swf files for the players ranging from 1mb to 3mb which are downloaded for every site every day!
    • very rarely youtube videos : 15-20mb/video atleast
      • even if you watch one or two videos a day 30mb/day
      • 900mb monthly
so, how does it surprise you that you cross your quota within the month. I am surprised you reach even half the month with such usage!!
Speaking of download savvy, a download savvy peson crosses 4gb/day...

    Default Check this !!!!

Scan your system for viruses. Even viruses and spyware may transmit data in the background even when you are not browsing any site or downloading.

Download free antivirus and other anti-spyware tools from filehippo.com

    Default Please help

    Hi,
I have got my broadband business plan connection for 8 GB of usage I got the extra bill for 4GB due to extra usage of 12 GB.
I have opened the cyber cafe in a small town where people just check mails and chat/voice-chat and hardly application forms download. I dont thing nothing big gets downloaded.

My download is increasing day by day . I suspect some virus/malware. How can i check what malware is downloading/uploading files of 400MB to 600MB.

Please help me as I have very small customer base and i dont think they are doing any big downloads. I am ending up paying more money to BSL than I earn from people. So running into two months losses now.

how can you say that your customers did just a small download...? are you keeping a tab on each and every customer....?

turn off windows, software's and anti virus updates they do downloading at background without our knowledge if settings are default.

if you suspect virus malware then do use a good anti virus software and scan your computer.

as you are in business so better keep a tab on how much your customers are downloading and chose proper plan according to your need better go for UL750.

    Possibilities

    1. Customer Downloading

    A. Use a good cyber cafe software and monitor the usage. This is recommended even if customer is not the downloader. Even watching YouTube can consume 100 MB/ hour. A Cyber cafe software can help you see which user is downloading how much.

    2. Some malicious software in the system

    A. At this point of time, it is almost impossible to monitor which software downloaded how much. A firewall is the next best option. But it provides a real time monitoring. ie, it will ask your permission before any software connect to internet. You can ask for customer assistance in this case. Use Bitmeter or any other download meter on an idle system for an hour and check how much it downloaded. If system is really infected with any malicious content, the download will be pretty high.

In short, using a cyber cafe software + Firewall will be the best option.

Now after installing a combination of imran utilities and macro manager I have just about been able to cut short my usage to around 2.5 GB to 2.8 GB. Close call though!!
