Default Nortel IP phone on BSNL

    Hi all !

This is a great forum - I'm learning a lot so far being a older techie! Thanks for all of your tips.

I just got a BSNL connection in my Ahmedabad home (good or bad is another topic!). I brought my Nortel IP phone that I use in my office in Singapore here to create a virtual office setting.

I've configured the Nortel IP phone (DHCP = 0) but when it tries to reach the Singapore server it says "Server Unreachable". I did some troubleshooting and found it could be one of two things (althought it could be something else!):

    1. the DNS address that I'm using is the Singapore DNS (StarHub is the ISP). I don't know the BSNL DNS - maybe if I use that it, might work. I tried an open DNS 208.67.222.222 but that didn't change anything.
    2. when I ping the Singapore DNS, I get 310ms (on average) which according to my IT guy is pretty slow - i set the retries on the phone to 5, but it still can't find the server.

PS: I have a Vonage IP phone from the USA here and it works fine - it has it's own router.

Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks all!

the Vonage was too easy to hook up - my father just plugged in the router to the BSNL modem an connected the phone and viola! all was good... except that people call us in the middle of the night!
