    when it comes to combining two routers , its always better to just have 1 DHCP server running so that later on you actually know for sure from where the ip is coming from. If the siemens is kept in ppppoe mode and with DHCP on , and you connect it to the LAN port of the wifi router with DHCP on , then PC would get ip from wifi and will not have connectivity to the gateway..
    its just a more organized way of networking.

    Ok. Then you must be connecting the 1st router to the 2nd router via the standard LAN port and not the Internet port.

    I have connected as follows:

    Tel. Line --> Splitter ---(data)---> UT-300R2U --(lan port)-----(internet port)--> WRT54G

    I have kept DHCP=ON on both routers.

    LAN IP Address of UT-300R2U = 192.168.1.1
    LAN IP Address of WRT54G = 77.101.89.1

    All PCs + Printer + Smartphone connect to WRT54G and they get LAN IP address from 77.101.89.101 onwards.

    @just4kix
    same set up here. with Vonage router also.
    modem ( dhcp enabled) Ip adddress 192.168.1.1
    Vonage (dhcp enabled) Ip address 192.168.15.1
    Netgear WGR614 ( dhcp enabled) ip address 192.168.2.1
    Laptop1 wifi mode 192.168.2.2
    laptop 2 lan mode 192.168.2.3
    In network settings Obtain Ip address automatically.

    Can access modem/vonage/netgear wifi/ settings effortlessly.

    @essbebe and superprash, Yes.

    I think that it is probably better to let DHCP=ON. It does not harm anyway.

    thats right , i think you got what i was trying to say.. in your type of setup where modem is in bridged mode and wifi router is in PPPoE mode , then DHCP = ON in both modem and router is FINE.. and yes preferred .BUT , if modem is in pppoe mode and router is in bridged mode ( which is something like what i have ) , then having DHCP=ON in router will not work.. as then all pc's will get the router's ip as the gateway which wouldnt work since the modem's ip needs to be the gateway ( since its in pppoe mode) .. This is what i feel!!

    Not at all. I have tried both setups - Modem in PPPoE, Wireless router in Bridge and vice versa. DHCP=ON on both.

    And both work.

    My current setup is UT300-R2U in PPPoE and WRT54G in Bridge.

    The DHCP service of the modem can assign automatic IP addresses to devices connected to it, viz. wireless router. The TCP/IP of UT300R2U is automatically assigned as 117.x.x.x by BSNL, gateway is 117.195.96.1.

    For the WRT54G, the external IP address is assigned by UT300R2U as:

    IP = 192.168.1.2
    Subnet = 255.255.255.0
    gateway = 192.168.1.1

    The DHCP of WRT54G assigns the automatic IP address to my desktop, laptop, printer and wi-fi smartphone.

    ok , what exactly is " external IP address" assigned by ut300r2u? you mean WRT54G is getting an ip via DHCP from ut300r2u?

    well , for some reason my router doesnt support getting an ip via DHCP from another router.. i need to specify a static ip for my router..interesting routers have that functionality!! , making a router just like any other computer...
