Internet speed is not always same and not fixed..

    ( surfing a web site/ downloading a file/ torrent downloads/ time of day
contention ratio (meaning how many others are using same server at the same time) etc )
You can expect in Home plans 250 / 500 speed upto 2 Mbps
usually you get .5Mbps to 1.5Mbps.

For details of tariff plans :
    Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

    To select a modem.

If you use a laptop , or more than one desktop
Type IV recommended. ( for 4desktops lan port /laptops WIFI)

On an average, Home 500 plans (promising speeds up to 2 mbps or 256 kBps), most people manage to get between 1.5 to 1.8 mbps.

Using µTorrent I get approximately 200 to 230 kBps speed. This is satisfactory.

I never tried p2p but direct download gives me upto 200 kBps speed. It is always different depending on the servers from where I download. From Rapidshare free download I get 50 to 60 kBps.

for torrents yes , you need to open ports and there are tweaks for utorrent as well.. not sure how effectivre they are thoguh.. although opening ports does help

Opening the port is the main trick.

The rest are tweaks that will only marginally improve speed.

I have used till Now Nokia Siemens C2210,Dlink GLB 502T and Iball iBLR6111A routers and getting same kind of downloads for last 1 year. Please don't go for Dlink GLB 502T.It gave me enough trouble.Download also depends upon Seeds and peers of a torrent file.So selecting a proper torrent file is also important.I Use utorrent for my downloads. Please see my downloads for a particular day between 2 A.M to 8 A.M. with Home 500C-

I have bsnl 750 unlimited plan (256 kbs speed) and Netgear DG834G modem.
With the modem bsnl provided my speed was 256 kb and in speed tests it was showing that. And I got constant disconnections. Now it goes up a few kbs (see picture 1) and when I get disconnected it's because of the server. A good modem helps too. (the ones provided by bsnl are bad)
But still.... when it worked, I could get 280 kbs down/ upload speed with a good torrent (I'm using Transmission).
Test your bandwidth speed, there are a lot of sites where you can do this.

A good torrent depends on many things: seeders/leechers, average speed of the torrent, good connection with the tracker.

You need to maximize your upload speed too. See picture 2 (this is from the help section of Transmission help). These are general rules for all torrent programs. There has to be some speed left for the torrent to 'communicate' with the tracker.
I could set the download speed on unlimited and it can get high peaks of even 350 kbs, but then it drops to 80 or something. It goes up and down constantly. My experience is that a steady speed it the fastest way to download. My settings with my old modem: max down 28/ max up 22.
New modem: max down 30/ max up 24. Works good. In perfect circumstances my speed is a steady 300 kbs with my new modem. (old: 280) Just like I set it in the program pref.

UTorrent is a good program, you just need to get the settings right. (google for it) I'm using Transmission because it's the best for my OS. UTorrent is (what I read and heard) the best for Windows.

In the Netgear I can forward my port and it was open for a few hours, but got stealth again...? I don't understand, but I really don't care anymore (It gave me a headache and I couldn't solve it. It's a problem well known in Transmission), because it's working well.

I have changed my DNS servers in open DNS (you can do this in the modem).
    I'm using:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
It makes the connection a bit faster and more reliable.

    About IP:
Bsnl uses dynamic IP. It changes every time you disconnect. As far as I know it's not possible to get a static IP. A dynamic or static one doesn't influence your speed or connection.

Hope all this helps you too.

Every machine has one so rest assured that your computer has got one as well.. thats where you plug in the ethernet cable and it looked like the phone jack but a bit larger in size.

Not all PCs have on-board Ethernet card. For my own PC I had to buy external LAN Card to use with bsnl broadband as I did not want to use USB connection. It costs Rs. 125 approximately and you can get it in any shop.
