Default Home 1000 OR Home 500 + diff connection ?

I'm using Home 1000 right now; which is basically Home 500 with a 5GB limit instead of 2.5GB.

Given the unreliability of BSNL, would it be a good idea to take Home 500 and another similar slightly cheaper plan from a different ISP ? Would it be cost effective ?
Also, is Airtel any good ?

Although I do most of my heavy downloading during the night I typically use up 4.5-5GB per month [I don't use streaming video/audio, internet still gets used up].

Having two broadband connections would result in the complications of monitoring how much bandwidth you have used for each -- but if you are willing to do that, then it might make sense.

Regarding Airtel, they also have quite a good DSL service and good customer care in case you need it, I have several friends with Airtel who swear by their service. If it is available in your neighbourhood, you may consider it.

Also, I really don't want to spend more than roughly 800-1200 on internet; is there any way to get 2 services in this way; or would i be better off with just home1000.

do check with reliance as airtel have implemented FUP, in reliance u get 300kbps in 500 pm and 500kbps in 950 PM what more u can ask for?

Yes, I've heard about Airtel's FUP i.e. capping speeds as soon as you download over a certain limit - so basically they're plans are not really unlimited.

in reliance u get 300kbps in 500 pm and 500kbps in 950 PM what more u can ask for?
Well BSNL gives you 2Mbps for 500 a month unlimited download between 2-8.
Realistically this translates to around 800-1300 kbps easily during the day time and a full 2MBps during the night unlimited period.

Before you even think of signing up Airtel or Reliance or any other, first check whether they are available at your location. Else all discussion is academic.

I suggest that, if you must, you take up two plans - BSNL Home 500 C+ (Rs. 600 + taxes) and BSNL UL 750+ (Rs. 750 + taxes - although I heard that it is avaiable for Rs. 500 in Kolkata). You could even think of Airtel or Reliance for the unlimited plan, if connection is available.

Use the UL connection during the day and most of your evening for normal work, surfing, emails, etc. Use the Home 500 C+ for downloads during the 2 AM to 8 AM window.

I live in Kolkata; bsnl, airtel, tata indicom and reliance are available here.

Yes this is basically what I want to do. Any recommendations on the 2nd plan other than BSNL ? (I'll already have a home500).
I don't want to take 2 plans by bsnl because I'll get more reliablity with connections from 2 providers.

Since Airtel and Tata Indicom have implemented FUP, I suggest Reliance.

I think Airtel has a better customer care. Since you already have Home 500, download limit won't be a problem. 10 GB will enough for day time use.
