Default Configure wireless ADSL modem on Laptop

    Hi,

My problem might be a simple one, but as I'm new to this I feel its complicated.

Our residence is a two storeyed building. We have BSNL Telephone at the first floor and a desktop PC at the same floor. On ground floor we have a laptop. I have applied for a Dataone Broadband internet connection with a wireless ADSL modem. Now I want to connect the laptop through wireless lan and the desktop with a network cable using RJ45. My plan is to place the modem at ground floor so that the laptop can have wireless access to internet and connect a network cable from ground floor to the first floor Desktop PC.

Is this the right way to connect or is there any other way around to achieve this?

Also I need a suggestion on how to configure the modem so that it is always connected so that the laptop or desktop can access internet at any time.

    Thanks,

    Dave

What you are trying to do is correct. But do ensure that voice/data splitter is installed at the entry point of the telephone line in the house.

If you want to connect more than one system to the modem, it should be in PPPoE (Always On) mode. Otherwise you need to use one system as proxy server. Normally BSNL modems are configured in PPPoE mode that we can simply connect by switching On the modem.

    Hope this will help

    @Davidpilli
We have BSNL Telephone at the first floor
    Wifi modem :
Height :Higher the better . ( "Line of Sight" propagation )
and obstructions make a difference .

Locate in First floor near a window.
    laptop should pick the signals.
    Feedback.

    Crude test:
If you have a cordless try to page the base
with the handset ( If Ok , B/B wifi may work
Power output higher in Telephone cordless).
Freq for BB WIFI around 2.4 Ghz like cellphone freq)

Thanks one and all for your suggestions! BSNL has not yet provided me the Dataone Connection yet . They say it will take one more week for installation. Seems they are in some kind of upgradation process for the Telephone Exchange. One more week of grit and pain for me. Hopefully someday they will come and install the equipment.
