    Cool Can I use a PC and a laptop in Broadband?

    I have a PC, which is presently connected to 'Sterlite' 'Smartax MT882 ' ADSL Modem by RJ45 cable. It is working fine for last 2-3 years. I am having BSNL 500C broadband connection.

    My son has gifted me a laptop with Linux 'Ubantu'. I am unable to connect it to broadband. My son has suggested to use a wireless router 'DLINK WIRELESS G BROADBAND ROUTER DIR 300 D-Link '.
    I am confused. Please help me what to do and how to.

    Yes. This is very much possible. You will need a wireless router as suggested by your son. But I will recommend Netgear or Linksys brands instead, as these are more reliable.

    The rest is easy: Solution for multiple machines connecting to same BB connection

    @superprash2003
    You are te LINUX expert.
    Please advise how to connect MT882 only
    to the laptop initially.
    ( with Linux operating system Ubuntu)

    Step by step settings in the laptop
    network (TCP/IP) settings.

    Then take up wifi connection to use
    both desktop and laptop.

    @subrato_sarkar
    Step 1 :
    Presume you will keep the desktop as a standby.
    No changes in modem.

    Step 2 :
    No changes in Modem.

    Your laptop can be used as a desktop, temporarily now
    using the built in ethernet LAN card in the laptop.
    problem for me also "Ubuntu" !

    Step 3 :
    In case you need mobility in the house, to use the laptop
    anywhere , wifi router is needed
    and settings made with the installation CD or wizard.

    Step 4:
    Back to step 2 Ubuntu for wireless Lan connection !

    Needed Info ;
    Confirm the laptop has a built in Wireless Lan card.

    If you mention the model and make we can search in Google
    and get the Hardware configuration of your laptop.

    For EXAMPLE ;
    My Sony laptop and Dell Inspiron 8000 both need, external
    PCmcia Wireless LAN card ( , to be inserted in the right side
    of the laptop.) some models on the left side.
    Latest models have built in Wireless lan card, as well as
    ethernet card.
    If you are familiar with all this kindly ignore.

    try connecting the modem directly to your Laptop using the RJ45 cable.. it should work by default.. try accessing http://192.168.1.1 .. if you have issues go to Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type ifconfig and post output of that command here
