get the full list and confirm. for your computer.

Realtek PCI ethernet card .If you like to use in WiFI mode
get PCI LAN wireless card for your desktop.
( appears almost same , but an antenna appears in the back of Desktop )
Rs 250 or Rs 1000 for wifi card .

Google search : Realtek PCI ethernet card .

If you have USB port, You can opt for a router with USB interface.

LAN card will be better option than USB. A LAN card is available for less than Rs. 1000.

But if you are going to upgrade the PC in the near future then don't buy the lan card.

Add to matrix's Reputation DONE !

Ensure BSNL supplies the cd containing USB drivers for that particular modem/router.

shubham3786 if you have USB port on your system then why do you spent money for buying a Lan Card where you dont need to share files or folders to other computers.

I have seen RJ-45 to USB interfaces. don't know whether they need any drivers though.

From USB port you will get 12Mbps data transfer speed which is mutch enough for BSNL Home 500 Plan because this plan provide upto 2Mbps download speed and 256Kbps upload speed.

The lancard specially the gigabite card is better for use where you want to tranfer big file like 10Gb or 20GB file from one computer to your computer. The file transfer time should be less then 10/100 Lancard. But you have to remember the computer from where you copy the file that computer should have the gigabite card also, otherwise you wount feel any deference in file tranfer timing.

You can buy the gigabite card it's very chip now a days.

Those who say that are completely incorrect.

Even the previous generation USB, the USB 1.1, had a transfer rate 12 Mbps which is way faster than the fastest connection in India.

The current USB 2.0 supports 480 mbps.

The problem (?) with USB driven modem is that it requires a driver. If you use a modem attached to the Ethernet LAN port, no driver is required.

So whereas the latest LAN can support 1 Gbps, it really makes no difference for internet usage, unless your ISP is giving speeds in excess of 500 Mbps.

so that means there is no need to install a pci lan card i am considering of getting a nokia simens modem which have usb and ethernet port both so i will connect it through usb

what do u think the nokia semens modem for connecting by usb would be a good choice? and will they (bsnl) provide usb driver cd with the modem?

    @shubham3786

and will they (bsnl) provide usb driver cd with the modem?
    Yes
But if your OS is Vista ,Window 7 , or Linux etc you will be sending "SOS"
    here for compatible. drivers .

    Get a LANcard.

Nowadays we connect so many devices via USB port as a preferred option.
    ( recent trend also ) mouse/keyboard/webcam camera etc .

But not for Broadband usage here in India , as at present.
Usually recommend LANcard for intermittent connections.
    Emphasis mine in below text.
Question: Which Broadband Modem Interface is Better - Ethernet or USB?

Most broadband modems support two kinds of network connections - Ethernet and USB. Both interfaces serve the same purpose, and either will work in most situations. Users can re-configure their modem between Ethernet and USB whenever needed, but both interfaces cannot be connected simulateously. So which is better?

Answer: Ethernet is the preferred option for connecting a broadband modem, for the following reasons:

    * Ethernet is technically more reliable than USB for networking. You are less likely to experience dropped connections or sluggish response time to your modem when using Ethernet over USB.

    * Ethernet cables can reach a longer distance than USB cables. A single Ethernet cables can run most anywhere within a home (technically up to 100m (328 feet), while USB cable runs are limited to approximately 5m (16 feet).

    * Ethernet does not require the installation of device driver software, while USB does. Modern operating systems like Microsoft Windows XP will be capable of automatically installing drivers for many broadband modems. However, the procedure varies on different operating systems and not all systems will be compatible with a given brand of modem. USB drivers can also slow down the overall performance of older computers. In general, a device driver is an additional installation step and source of potential problems that you need not worry about with Ethernet.

    * Ethernet supports higher performance networking than does USB. This is the first advantage of Ethernet that many techies notice, but performance is actually the least relevant consideration in this list when choosing between USB and Ethernet connections. Both Ethernet and USB 2.0 interfaces support sufficient bandwidth for broadband modem networking.
Modem speed is instead limited by the speed of the modem's connection to your service provider.

One possible advantage of the USB interface over Ethernet is hardware cost. If the computer being connected to a broadband modem does not already possess an Ethernet network adapter, one must be purchased and installed. Normally, the other advantages of Ethernet listed above easily outweigh this up-front effort.

Ethernet LAN cards are not just meant for personal internet connections. The main use of the LAN card is on corporate LAN which provide internal network speeds of 1 Gbps. Even the smallest office will have a 100 Mbps LAN.

I am still using it. We do not have much option if we take the modem from BSNL. They will give you what they have in stock.

I would suggest going for Wi-Fi even though it is more costly because it will be better for future. It is only Rs. 600/- more. We spend more money on a family visit to a nice restaurant.
