Angry Type-3 & Type-4 modems are not available: BSNL

One of my cousins went for submitting Dataone application form & the JTO told him that Type-3 & Type-4 modems are currently not available with BSNL and you've to satisfy yourself with either Type-1/Type-2 modem.

He is more interested in Type-4 modem since it's of the same cost as of Type-2 and has more ports.

    So, what to do ?

Currently available type 2 modems are very much similar to type 4 modems. So go ahead and get a type 2 modem.

I am using a ZTE ZXDSL 531B modem. It was bought classified as a type 2 modem from BSNL. It has 4 lan ports and 1 wifi antenna. Which is very much equal to a type 4 modem.

If Type 3/4 are not available then I will recommend going for Type 2 and later on exchanging with Type IV.

Really? Because as per BSNL Type II means USB+Wi-Fi.

specs are also likely to change as new tenderers supply cheaper and with more facilities.

yes , that happens here as well , most of the other modems are out of stock .. at some places you just have to accept whatever they are providing.. if BSNL doesnt provide a wifi modem , you should consider buying one from outside like a netgear wifi router

Does the Netgear wifi router include the ADSL modem also ?

I've read that some of the routers needs to be connected like : Modem -> WiFi Router and not every model has ADSL functionality.

    That's why...

yes your absolutely right , you have to look for netgear routers with the DSL modem built in.. an easy way to identify that is to look for an RJ11( telephone ) port in it..

I have recently got a type II modem (DNA-A211-1). It has 4 ethernet ports and wifi. I want to know whether it is possible to share the connection with 6 people through wifi while putting a password to restrict connectivity to others. Or do I need to buy a router for this purpose? Kindly help.

    DNA-A211-I is a type 4 ADSL ROUTER.
You can share the connection over wifi to more than 250 systems if you like, using this router.
You can (should) set a password for wireless on the router to allow only systems which authenticate using this password to connect. You can also restrict to the 6 systems by setting up MAC security on the router, so that only systems with the specified MAC addresses can connect.

There is atleast one guide on this forum on setting wireless security up.

You can set the WPA Pre-Shared Key in the modem, so those who know the key will only get connected through wifi.

For additional security you can use the Wireless -- MAC Filter option in the modem, the MAC ID or Physical Address of the WiFi Adapter will be stored in the modem and you can allow access only to whom you want.

Thanks Glass and Deepmohan for the quick reply. I did try to enable WEP-PSK in my modem and set a password but on doing so only one system was being able to connect to the net. The BSNL guys who had come to give the connection also had said the same thing that on putting password only one system is being able to connect through wireless at a time though it should not be so.
I havent tried the MAC filter yet. Is there any upper limit of the number of systems that can be connected with mac filtering?
And Glass what do u mean when u say to put password in a router? U mean I have to get an external router or r u talking about router in my modem?

    - Connect multiple systems without password/key first.
    - Confirm you are in PPPOE mode. If you are in bridge mode, you can connect only one system via line or wifi (bridge is when you use a dialer from your computer to connect).
    - After you are successful, go for WPA security unless your laptops don't support WPA. It is easy to break WEP security.

    I don't think so.

As deepmohan also mentioned, it is your router plus modem.

I did connect all systems without password first.
I am in PPPoE mode (I do not need to dial to connect)
And I did try WPA-PSK (sorry typed wrongly in my previous post) and put a key.
Then I tried to connect through my laptop and it asked for key. On typing key I got connected. Then in another laptop I tried to connect and it asked for key. On typing key it got connected too and web page opened. Then On returning to my own laptop I couldnt open web page anymore.. On trying to connect a 3rd laptop the 2nd laptop could not open web page..

Any idea whats the problem? BSNL people told they faced same problem in other modems also.

And how do I know whether my laptop supprts WPA?

Is there any guide anywhere in this forum on MAC filtering? How to get MAC adress of my laaptop?

    @ambiras
In all laptops select in network settings
    obtain Ip address automatically.
    In router enable DHCP.
see this link to re check settings.
    similar to DNA A211-I
    http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...reference.html

Also a software update has been recommended for DNA A211-I.

    MAC address ;

you will get the MAC address of your Wireless LAN card of each laptop
    by
    START RUN type cmd Ok
    New window opens
    type ipconfig /all

I think you need this MAC details rather than the laptop's.
    Not sure.

    Feedback.

The MAC addresses needed will be of the laptops which should get access. The simplest way to get them is to connect all laptops via wifi, and then go to the 'Station Info' menu item in the router page. You will see a list of laptops connected and you can copy their MAC addresses and configure the access in another page that says 'MAC FILTER'.

    Update :

My cousin got a Type-2 modem(UTStarcom). It came with 4 LAN ports + WiFi.

So, the new Type-2 modems are same as Type-4 modems.

    Hi folks,

How do you find the Type-II modems being supplied these days? (in terms of quality, stability, synching of connections, heat generation etc etc.)

I have an old WA1003A which has lasted a few years.... I find it a bit unstable at times, but nothing to complain about given its price

But practically it is useless to have 250 user on single wifi router...
In that situation the speed of network and of INTERNET will be like snells speed, it will just crawl...... :tt2:
