Talking Dialup connection when BSNL BB is down

    Published in Hindu newspaper yesterday.

When your broadband internet connection is down, at that time you can use dialup connection as a backup connection. Some procedure are there to be done for the setup. Did any one know about this? I feel its a good idea. Others can share your views about this.

Also can any one tell me about how to setup this connection in detail?

First of all you need a 56K modem which is different from your current broadband modem.

In older systems its usually there. it can be internal or external

    internal

    external

then you have to connect your present telephone line into the modem. for this you can get a two way splitter from market, which has 3 telephone connecton sockets.

connect the incomming line from exchange to one socket and connect modem and telephone to other two sockets.

while you are using the modem, then if anyone calls, they will get engaged tone, u cannot access internet and phone at same time.

    Setting up the Modem :

    1. Install drivers from the CD you got with modem.
    2. then check if modem is installed , by using control panel > Phone and Modem options > Modem
    3. next goto network connections in control panel and click on create new connection

Yes, what they meant is that you can use the existing phone connection to access net.

Usually we subsribe to some service to access net, but for BSNL Landline users its not required.

This service is called Netone Accountless Service.

You can get all details here :

well these were the key points

The only requirement for having the duplicate keys to the cyberworld is a dial-up modem, which is available on most personal computers and laptops, and the cable from the telephone jack connected to the computer port.

All a subscriber needs to do is click the dial-up icon and enter the landline telephone number preceded by the STD code without the “0.” For instance, a Chennai number should be preceded by “44” while the eight-numeral telephone number is the password.

The number to dial through the computer is 172222 and can be accessed from a BSNL landline anywhere in India.

The flip side is that anyone calling a user who is on dial-up mode will be greeted with an engaged tone.
