    Default Excessive Billing

    I'm using a 256kbps connection with a 1GB download limit. Every month my downloads do not cross 1GB. In the month of Jun09, I was surprised to know that I had crossed 5GB and received a bill of more than Rs 4000. Upon enquiry with the concerned BSNL department, I was bluntly told that the download happened from my Modem.

    I suspect some foulplay. Is there any means of knowing the IP address of the computer from which downloads have happened? Also please let me know of the appropriate BSNL office where I can escalate the problem.

    Thanks in advance.

    Do you use a wifi instrument ? If not, talk to the Senior Divisional Engineer (SDE) and confirm that the usage is through your modem's Mac ID.

    It is wise to check the usage details at regular intervals. Try this

    4 Ways to Check BSNL Broadband Usage Details

    For complaints,

    A written complaint with receipt to Nodal officer and Appellate authority. Address and phone no on the backside of your bill. Call in person and seek help

    check if your connection is port binded.am sure it is not because that's the only way some one else can use your ID and password to connect to the internet.i am certain your account has been hacked.it's damn easy to hack a bsnl account.i won't say how it is done because that would be illegal .

    let me explain to u how the hacker hacked into your account.he used a scanner to access your ip address.then he hacked into your modem.how did he do it? well I am 100 % positive that your ID and password for accessing the modem is "admin" and "admin".that's the default for all bsnl modems.it's a child's play to get into a modem.after that accessing your ID and passwords for BSNL is just a walk in the park.

    what's done is done.i don't know if BSNL is gonna charge you for what u have not downloaded but i can advice you 1 thing-"CHANGE THE PASSWORD FOR ACCESSING YOUR MODEM FROM "ADMIN" TO SOMETHING MORE COMPLICATED".that way no 1 will get a chance to access your modem remotely.

    @iorhld
    after that accessing your ID and passwords for BSNL is just a walk in the park.
    if the user had selected "bridged' mode ID/PW will not appear
    in the modem settings.
    Assuming "hacker" sees the userId and PW in plain language
    say myself in Chennai; can I log-in to his account ?
    or only the particular Telephone exchange in his town /city ?
    again assuming his telephone number is not "Port Binded "

    @muyeen

    You can still access your BILLED usage data for June 2009
    and find out when this excess down load happened.
    Use your 14 digit portal Id and password and check at
    http://bbservice.bsnl.in
    Presume you mean HOME250 tariff plan. speed upto 2 Mbps limit 1 GB.

    Yes I agree, there are such trojans which eat up much bandwidth and will not allow to work in a network environment.

    As a linux user and have a good firewall, I come across many port scanning messages from my firewall when connected through BSNL BB (even though I disabled all access to my system, somebody tries to access my system). My advice is be very cautious and take all precautions.
