    Angry BSNL Miscalculating my Usage..

I'm using BSNL 500c for a long time with Tautology Bandwidth meter. It was good until last month. The BSNL portal shows my Usage as 1951MB while Tautology shows under 1536 MB only. It's gonna cost me 330 Rs more this month. I haven't received the bill yet and I'm afraid my pops gonna kill me

It's continuing this month too. BSNL portal is showing 700MB usage while Tautology showing ~400MB. It's the same case for some of my friends, but for them the difference is only 60MB or less. For me it's 300MB difference. Please help. I schedule my pc to download during 2:30 to 7:30 AM to utilise the free time. Did the free time limit changed? If not why I'm getting charged too much.

I can't post the screen shot of tautology meter for the last month.

This is the bsnl usage screen shot for the last month: old.jpg

BSNL Screenshot for this month: new.jpg

Tautology screenshot for this month: new2.JPG

There is not much we can do. BSNL do not value the reading by Tautology meter. Try Shaplus Bandwidth meter, I think it is more accurate.

ShaPlus Bandwidth Meter - Freeware to display bandwidth consumed for session, day and month

Check the interfaces which are monitored. Always counter check with portal values at regular intervals.

    see this screen shot.
    1. Why you need the details since 19/3/2009 ?
    2. did you set a change over date ?
    3. Have you set the correct time ( 24hours clock )
not to record usage during your free time ?

    4. Your monthly average has exceeded 2 GB since march 2009.
    12.7GB/5 months = 2.54GB
    5. You have circled only In data . Out data also counted.

    6. If you use WIfi mode another computer/laptop
or VOIP usage will not be recorded.
    7. Better use FireFox browser with Datafox add on to keep track,
of WHAT BSNL usage portal is recording your usage.

    8. By any chance if the Tautology meter was disabled
during certain days the total can be misleading.
    9. Check the Month wise data report in this meter with
    Bsnl month wise readings.
    10. Feedback.

Did you change over from Home 500 to Home 500 c?

    @essbebe
I know all that. I'm not a n00b. Everything went fine except recently. But Thanks for telling me about the DataFox. I didn't know that existing.

BTW I have figured out the Problem by myself. It's because The Stupid BSNL bandwidth meter calculates for two hours after I hibernate my pc. (I have rounded that.. see image).
    stupidbsnl.jpg

So when my pc autopowers on at 2:05AM and starts downloading, they charge me for downloading during that time (2:05 to 2:17AM) as (12:17 to 2:17AM) even though it's supposed to be free. It explains why Tautology and Shaplus showing less usage(correct usage). I've been recommending BSNL to everyone but Now I hate it.

I guess I should turn off and on the modem after I hibernate the pc. Or I should rather set the pc to auto power on at 3'o clock. If anyone know a better solution, pls help.

It is common knowledge that you need to reboot your modem a little after 2.00 am and a little before 8.00 am. There are reports otherwise, it is still better to stick to this.

I've been continuing this for more than 18 months but experiencing this only recently. Anyway I can't wake up during that time. Is there a way to schedule to reboot?

    "ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns" Saving these commands in a batch file and scheduling them to run can help?

You can automate the whole process

    For PPPoE mode

    http://imran-utilities.synthasite.com/

    For Bridge mode

    Batch file method :

    Exclamation

I think for automating this process, bridge mode is the best way since the modem can be on and only when one dial's the modem and connects does the meter reading gets accounted.

I am using the Broadband Scheduler v1.1 made by DijinAugustine. It is an excellent tool and is flawless. Both pppoe and bridge mode options are provided but I prefer bridge mode.

You can get the bbscheduler from here:
    Broadband Scheduler - Home

    actually it is very simle..
In the Modem (mt882) page -
    in wan settings - choose
    PVC Number : PVC-0
    wan type - RFC2684Bridged
    Connection Type - Pure Bridged
    VPI/VCI - 0/35
    Encap. LLC

apply or save , then reboot the modem.

Then in ur network connections- new connection wizard-
    1 Connect to the Internet.
    2 Setup my connection manually
3 Connect using a broadband that requires user-name and password
    4 then ISP name
    5 user name , password and u r done.

There is no specific advantage of being in bridge mode. You can continue in PPPoE if you wish.

As per latest system adopted by BSNL, the server rechecks every 30 min if it is in free or in chargeable time. This is also evident in the screenshot provided.
Since you logged in at 12.17 it has put downloads upto 2.17 as chargeable and then changed the session to free session.

Solution : restart the modem at 12.35 AM. And set up your system to start download from 2.15 AM only. This would create a new session in the server at 2.05 AM which would be in free mode and your downloads would also be in free mode.
