Don't you think that you have given a very expensive setup to Rajat. I think what he was looking was a simple LAN setup at home without any routers and switches being involved in it. Do you have any other or rather a little expensive way of putting two computers on Lan. I guess he only has BSNL connected on one comouter and would wana use the same internet connection on his second computer as well.

your right Sandra, i would prefer connecting the two with a cross over cable and then accessing the interent from one computer and use the other one for storing data.

let me remid you the setup given is the best, if you are going to go for cross over cable.. then u got be using Ineternet Connection Sharing which is not the best way.. you have to keep the connected host always on and for some reason if it goes down, the other cant access.. so get a router as you wud, but an additional hub/switch (that the only expense + cables) doesnt look that expensive to me at all

If you use a Netgear DG632 modem/router, this becomes really simple. The DG632 is basically a router-modem combination and can be used in either mode. It can also be connected through a USB or an Ethernet connection. I've connected my desktop through the USB and then connected another computer through the regular LAN cable. Voila! I have a wired home network in which both my computers can now use the Internet and as well have a peer-to-peer sharing!

    a) Enable 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks' from your 'Local Area Connection Properties'.

    b) Your computers must be part of workgroup (or domain)

    c) After you have added the computers to a workgroup, you can enable folder sharing and then you will be able to copy files across computers.

    Connect as follows:

    1. Phone Line --> Splitter
    2. Splitter Modem Port --> UT-300R2U
    3. LAN port of UT-300R2U --> Input port (LAN) of Netgear switch
    4. Your PCs/laptops to any of the 8 LAN ports

Setup UT-300R2U in PPPoE mode. Follow my sticky post (Solution to multiple connections ...) for this. DHCP must be on.

Use the Network Setup Guide to add your machines to a computer network domain.

    1. Right click on 'My Computer' --> Select Properties
    2. Click on tab 'Computer Name'
    3. Click on 'Network Id' button - Wizard will appear. Click Next.
    4. On next screen, select the option 'This computer is part of a business network ...' (first option). Click next.
    5. On next screen, select the option 'My company uses a network without a domain' (second option). Click next.
    6. On next screen, enter the name of your workgroup (default = WORKGROUP). Keep the same or give a name of your choice such as 'MYHOME_NET'. Click next.
    7. On the last screen, select 'Close' and reboot your machine.

Repeat this procedure for all machines.

After this you will be able to access all machines by their names (whatever appears in My Computer). You will also be able to share folders and copy files.

    Cool

I think ur problem is simple.

If u r using two lan cards on one system one for dataone and other for netwroking then the networking lan card is showing limited connectivity on main computer as well as on other client computer.

If u see the details of this connection it will show that it is unable to get physical ........

This is because the two cards are conflicting with each other (Not due to IRQ but due to same TCP/IP settings)

A better option is to open the TCP IP Properties and set it manually.

    For ex:-

    On main PC:
    IP Address: 169.254.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

Leave the gateway and DNS settings blank.

    On client computer
    IP Address: 169.254.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

    Gateway: 169.254.1.1
    DNS Server: 169.254.1.1
    Alternate DNS: blank

Also note one think both computers must be on same workgroup. For checking this open system properties and check for Network ID.

    For further queries reply

Also for connecting more computers just increase the IP Address. Remaining entries will remain same.

    Default Sify Broadband

I dont know much about networking..

I have 2 pcs at home.. both in different rooms..
in one computer i have 2 lan cards.. let this computer be A and in another room i have one computer in which there is one lancard.. let this computer be B.

I get internet thru sify broadband... the wire comes from a switch from my bldg terrace to computer A ... now i want to use same internet connection in computer B also... I tried this by connecting a wire in one lan card of computer A to a lancard in computer B...

    Now, the whole scenario is:
Computer A: Has 2 lancards, in one lancard wire from SifyBB comes and in other lancard a wire is connected whose other end is connected to computer B having single lancard.

After making these connections.. i find that no light is coming on the lancards which are connecting two computers..in both these lancards I have kept 'Obtain IP address automatically'

Please help me, how shd i make the settings and proceed further?

i presume that you want computer B to have internet access.. you can do this by enabling ICS(internet connection sharing) in computer A.. Your hardware setup is perfect for this.. You could follow this How to configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP
