Default Is it possible to have more than 255 clients connected to a router.

At the place where I work we have BSNL business broadband connection. But the number of clients on the LAN is more than 280. Our roter's LAN IP is 192.168.1.1 . I wanted to know if is it possible to have clients with ip addresses like 192.168.2.* and 192.168.3.* so on for accessing internet from the same router.

Default connect >250 computers to SINGLE modem for Inet

    1.
YES. may be upto 253 IP addresses, which will be
automatically allotted by the DHCP server in modem/router.
Mention modem/router model to check limit to connections
    2.
In all computers TCP/IP select obtain IP address automatically.
    3..
    How they are connected now?
    4.
Who is buying the switches ?
    5.
Explain how you connect 280 computers to a single modem !
    6.
Get a high speed connection U/L Business tariff plan .
    7.
Assuming 20 MB used by one system average per day
for say 250 computers it will be 5000 MB or approx 5GB
Per month 150 GB! minimum usage ( No control on D/L possible)

Sorry to barge in but connecting 200+ computers with the same router does not seem to be the cleverest idea, I would suggest a managed switch system with redundancy which would cost you some where around $30000 to $50000 depending upon the brand you use. It would be best to use the same brand throughout and the best of the breed if you want to see this setup working seamlessly.
Another thing worth mentioning would be that it would be best to have atleast 3 different internet connections to make sure there is no downtime as the losses would be massive with so many computers being connected to the same internet connection going down all at once.

    Waiting for feedback.
Better to get 4 different tariff plans
from different ISPs and split each LAN to
    say 60 systems.
Also a Load balancing router can be used.
Restrict Internet access to select few system/s only.
    2.
If the office pays/foots the bill for FREE access to Internet
    to ALL ( systems)employees ( and installs the hardware/switches/modems etc )
    why object

    Para two:
Why the question about 255 limit ?

The broadband was unlimited connection. We used to have 2 comp labs with about 80 pcs. Suddenly a new lab was setup with 60 more pc's. And there were pc's in offices. Even we have wi-fi with four access points. Wi-fi users are about more than 100. But very rarley the lab comps were connected to to net, whenever we did we used to get ip conflicts. But we recently subscribed a lease line (micro wave) with 4mb speed. The router we got with the lease line was WAN router (cisco based MAIPU). It doesn't have NAT. They gave us 6 internet ips. I used one ip to a NAT router (Buffalo whr hp 54, with tomato firmware). But as the pc's are more on the network, I'm wondering weather I should go for one more NAT router. If i do it I cannot have a centralist LAN, which is very necessary for our organization ( as we have to provide LAN based applications). Please suggest some solution. I chose tomato because of better QOS features, but it]s not that much efficient, and it only shapes upstream data flow. Some one had put up a firewall script for tomato to shape bandwidth, which I tried, but even it is not giving any satisfiable results.

Somthing you miss there. Need Router to use the subnet to connect with different network. In same network 510 PC dose not install untile you use the Router with switch.

Yes this is possible. If BSNL give you the Router then this is possible. Purchase or ask the BSNL to give you the Router WA3002-G1 which is Type 2 model in BSNL and also have the Wireless Connection.
This BSNL Router WA3002-G1 is very good and very easy to setup the subnet for connect with different network and browse the internet using this router WA3002-G1 just like you want. You only need a switch to connect the PC with this Router.
