wired Broad band is always consistent, given that the bandwidth congestion is not there. RF has always , its own contribution to inconsistency.
In a given situation, thus, a modem based gives better performance.

I checked the speeds available from Bsnl and I personally think at these speeds it will not matter whatever you use. Even if your router connects at 2mbps you would still not get a bottle neck due to wifi.

In test conditions I agree wired connection will perform a bit better and will give you lesser ping times as well.

A typical wired ethernet connection will be 100mbps
(the small b is for bits) which comes out to about 12.5mBps
    (Big B for Bytes).
That's at 100% efficiency, without overhead.

The fastest wireless is 802.11g which is a 54mbps (*108mbps available)
(small b again) connection, which is 6.75mBps.
Once again that doesn't factor in overhead, which
there is quite a bit of in the wireless protocol.

    If it's 802.11b, which only runs at 11mbps (1.37mBps)
the throughput is of course lower. (* like USB 1.0Port)

The main point though is that even assuming maximum
wireless signal strength, wireless contains more overhead
data to be transmitted along with the actual data.
Also interference In the 2.4 GHz band. .
