If the modem is UT300R2U (new Model) confirm
You many not get USB drivers to use the USB Port.
for VISTA OS . LAN port will work.

How do u connect i.e. lan or usb

If you are using usb port to connect, it fails certain times however, if you connect through ethernet port, you will nice connectivity.

I am using the modem(utstarcom ut300r2u) since October, 2007 over xp, vista and now using it on windows 7. Working very well.

In xp no problems even if u connect through usb port.

So, It seems to be drivers issue.

Connect using LAN port. It is simpler.

There will be a small hole on the back or bottom. Use a Pin or refill.

hi i did a modem reset as mentioned by you. And now my system is able to configure the ip addresses properly i think.
i did a ipconfig /all and got the below for the ethernet connection

    ipv4 address : 192.168.1.2
    default gateway: 192.168.1.1
    dns server: 192.168.1.1
    dhcp enabled

i am also able to ping 192.168.1.1 sucessfully.
but still i am not able to open the modem settings page in browser {192.168.1.1} also i am not able to connect to internet thru the broadband connection. it is giving me a 815 error.

"815 - The broadband network connection could not be established on your computer because the remote server is not responding. This could be caused by an invalid value for the 'Service Name' field for this connection. Please contact your Internet Service Provider and inquire about the correct value for this field and update it in the Connection Properties."

before resetting the modem i was able to connect to broadband it used to show connected with access "local and internet".

    what should i do ??

Your OS seems to be VISTA.
( steps given for XP PRO SP3)

    error code 815
this is when you have a broadband connection and the default connection is dialup.

    1. Check if your LAN Connection is enabled
    start/ all programs/accessories/ communications
    Network connection wizard.
( Your user ID/PW to be entered in Modem later when you access 192.168.1.1)
    Error message now.
    and ipconfg /all ( No edit )
    2. Check for dialers
    3. Dialer
Select Never Dial a Connection under Connections tab on your Internet Explorer
    {Internet Options/connections}
    4. Reboot modem
    5. Open Internet Explorer

    Feedback.

To connect through USB port you need to install drivers if you are connecting through lan no need for drivers I have used utstarcom ut300r2u over xp, vista, windows 7, ubuntu, and other livecd editions of linux no issues no config required.

Hi all, thanks for all your help.

I was finally able to resolve the problem. I had to reinstall windows vista again. The problem was with norton internet security that came preinstalled with my laptop. I had uninstalled it before and this had screwed up my network controller files.

My advice is plz make sure to use norton removal tool from norton website to uninstall any norton product. the uninstaller in add/remove program does a lousy job for norton.

best security according to me is

    Windows 7 + Avast 5 or 4.8 + Microsoft Security Essentials + SpyBot
