    Post BSNL Modem Rs.2000 ?

I downloaded the BSNL BB application form from the Website which says the One time cost of Modem is Rs.2000.
But the tariff Page says the cost to be Rs.1000 and Rs.1600.

    Which one is true ?

I do not need WiFi with the Modem and hence a Simple Modem.
If the modem is Rs.2000 from BSNL, would it be advisable to purchase a Modem from the Market ?

    Thanks.

PS : My first of Hopefully many posts to come.

    Thanks talktoanil and Deepmohan.

I am a bit apprehensive about the commitment period involved with BSNL BB along with the Modem monthly EMI.

Although it does make a lot of sense that the Modem can be replaced if there is anything wrong with it. But doesn't the modem come with some Warranty Program when I purchase it from BSNL ? I tried searching the BSNL website for Agreement regarding the modem, but could not find anything.

And moreover, if I am not satisfied with the connection, I would prefer terminating it early. Which is a slight hassle if am in the commitment Period.

So the decision I have made is :

    1. Purchase of the Type 1 modem (without WiFi) from BSNL.
    2. Home 500 Plan
    3. Monthly Payment option.

Any one who has experience of a Similar combination, please write your comments regarding your experience.

    Thanks.

The modem if purchased from bsnl will have 1 years Warranty, if any faults then the same can be replaced. Commitment period with bsnl is one month.

If you are not sure about the service being provided by bsnl at your place then i will suggest you to go with a rented modem rent for month will be Rs.40/-, check the quality of service you are getting then decide. If you are satisfied then go for outright purchase of modem.

Buy modem from BSNL on monthly rent. Discontinue if it does not fits you.

    Thanks Deepmohan and MeetDilip.

As per your suggestion, I will go for the Monthly EMI for the Modem.

I have one more concern. I read through the threads which discuss the Huge Bill related issues.
Do you think it is better to choose 'Home 750 Unlimited' plan over Home 500 ?
I am guessing the speed will reduce a lot in the Unlimited plan. But at least the Bill would be consistent and without any frivolous charges.

    Please suggest.
    Thank You.

Decide in which category you fall , heavy down-loader or normal ?
if you need to watch a movie per night or even alternate night , then go for Home500 else Home UL 750.

if you get Home500 plan, free usage time is 02.00 AM to 08.00 AM and hence you need to reboot the router OR dial the connection after 02.00 AM so a new session is started and then reboot router / disconnect internet before 08.00 AM.

If you start your session at 1.45 AM and end it at 08.00 AM , you will be charged for entire night. this is how BSNL works actually what should happen is they should only charge you for 1.45 AM to 02.00 AM and rest upto 08.00 AM free. but BSNL dont have such systems and hence its better to be on safer side and reboot the router.

And dont worry you can schedule your PC to do all this and have a sound sleep. check threads for automated downloads during 2-8. you will find 100's of thread with solutions here

    Welcome

I use UL 750. There are many member who use Home 500, 500 C or 500 C+ plans. It is the most popular among BSNL users. But you need to be a bit careful while downloading. Reboot your modem a little after 2.00 am and a little before 8.00 am.

Thanks essbebe , talktoanil and Meetdilip for all your comments.

I am not a very heavy downloader and prefer the Peace of Mind of not expecting a Bill over Rs.750 + Modem (Monthly rent) + Taxes.

Thanks essbebe for the offer news. I submitted the application form today. BSNL staff not very helpful as usual. They did not inform me of any such offer.

They have given me a printed receipt of my Application. And told me that all the charges will be part of my Bill.

Upon asking how long it will it take to get the connection, I got 'the LOOK' and the answer as 'One month'.

I hope I would be charged as per the offer stated by essbee.
    Thanks Again.

    Hello Everyone.
After 2 months, I have managed to get the Modem and Login ID.

But guess what ? They did not have any one to set up the Modem so I have to do it myself.

I have the ZTE ZXDSL 531B Wireless Modem. I have connected the phone line and the modem cable.I followed the Instructions (LAN Properties, IP Address, DNS server address, New connection, Bridging, etc) and the end result was this

---> In the Modem, Only Power and WLAN Lights are On (DSL and Internet are off)
When I click on Connect, after some time I get Error 678

I have updated the Computer Drivers.
    Any Hints ?

And by the way, The Modem is 1600 Rupees.

    I know whats the problem.
you have to disconnect and connect all telephone cables attached to your modem.....
If do not see the light on the DSL then the problem is there......
DSL lights are necessary to connect to internet as it tells us wheather the server is connect-able or not...........

    Thanks for your Reply.

I tried unplugging and Plugging the Modem all over again. There is no reset hole in this model. But things are still the same.

DSL and Internet Lamp's are still off. And when I dial to connect, I get this

    'Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPoE)'.
After 30 seconds I get the Error 678.

Could it be because BSNL server is down ?

Also for the users who currently use BSNL, when you plug the phone line into the modem, does the DSL light come on even before you connect to the internet ?

Thanks for reply essbebe, I did as asked by you.

WAN 0/0/35, Enable VLan taggin 'Unchecked'.Service Category - 'UBR without PCR'.
    PPPoE , Encapulation mode - LLC/SNAP-Bridging.
PPP Username and Password set, Authentication method - 'Auto', No boxes ticked.

DHCP enabled. Both saved and Modem rebooted. DNS for Lan and WLan changed and computer Rebooted.

    Still unable to connect.

    Heres the ipconfig/all Log.

    1. RESET
When you can access the modem settings pages you can reset also. Check under
    management or maintenance.

All modems usually have a RESET access.
In the bottom all openings will be square type except one which will be round.Usually near the right leg.
Or see betweenPower cord input and RJ11 input point.
    confirm.
No need for you to reset the modem.
    2.
    Mode of connection
Disable the Dialer. According to you ,you are on
"ALways On" PPPoE mode where you have entered UserId/ PW in WAN page (stored in the modem.).
    3.
If you are using IE go to tools/Advanced/connections
check "never dial a connection "

    @Standard1
Your DSL LED is off then no ADSL signal in your line. BSNL dont set up yet your phone line to DSLAM switch box in your Exchange.
There is no need to tweak your modem, not yet. When you see your DSL LED is glow up then think about of setting your modem.

I can say that If you use splitter or filter in your line then cheak it. Is it connect properly or not and if possible for testing direct connect your modem to your phone line.

@ Essbebe, Thank you very much for your reply.

Since you did not comment on the ipconfig/all, I am presuming there is nothing wrong or abnormal there.

Yes the modem can be reset from the 'Maintenance' page of Modem.
'Always ON' is set and Browser is instructed 'Never to dial connection'.

    @Indranil, Thanks for your reply.

The Splitter connection looks fine and I am facing the similar issue when the Phone line is directly connected into the Modem.

I have read through the Modem manual and all the actions performed by me so far are in accordance with it.
So hopefull what Indranil has said is correct and I will have to wait till monday to ask the BSNL Exchange if they have Activated the Internet connection on my Telephone Line.

I will write back as soon as I find out.

    Thanks and Regards.

Your modem is capable of testing your DSL connection. The individual tests are listed below. If a test displays a fail status, click "Rerun Diagnostic Tests" at the bottom of this page to make sure the fail status is consistent. If the test continues to fail, click "Help" and follow the troubleshooting procedures.

Test the connection to your local network
    Test your ENET(1-3) Connection: FAIL
    Test your ENET4 Connection: PASS

Test the connection to your DSL service provider

Even if you connect the rj11 to modem DIRECT from Phone Junction by passing ADSL splitter, connection is same.
Unless there is an internal disconnection ( Open circuit) in the ADSL splitter.
The LC filter circuits are required only for the PHONE.

Yes the Realtek ethernet is updated.
And thanks for the explanation. Now I understand the working of the Splitter.
I have the splitter back on because if I connect the Rj11 directly to Modem, I miss a lot of Phone Calls.
