Default Type I vs. type IV modem

    Hi,

I recently upgraded my type-I modem to type-IV. The speed as checked from congland.com is almost the same in both cases, however torrent speeds have gone down by 1/3. With type-I, I get 150-200KBPS downloads but with type-IV I get only 50-60KBPS. I'm using only the wired connection for torrent purpose (not wifi).

What I find strange is that while I get 150KBPS on type-I, the moment I shift to type-IV, speed goes down to 50KBPS. All I have to do is shift my RJ11 and RJ45 cables from one to the other, and I get hit!

Can any one throw some light on how to rectify the situation?

    Thanks,

    Sunil

Speed has nothing to do with the Type of modem. Torrents speed cant be considered as a parameter for speed test.

I understand that. But I'm confused on how torrent speed goes down by connecting the same line to a type-IV modem.

Say, I'm downloading a torrent through type-I at 150KBPS. Now I stop the torrent, shift the line to type-IV and restart the torrent. Speed goes down to 50KBPS. Again I stop the torrent and go back to the type-I modem and torrent speed again goes up!!

    Well said Deepmohan.
It is only additional facilities number of ports, wireless access etc make Type 4. Type2 is similar but with lesser wired ports.

Thanks, I'll check that... but when all other variables are same, do you think port forwarding will help? I mean, I use the same settings for the torrent client with the 2 types of modems.

port forwarding means to open a port for connecting to a reasonable amount of seeds.

i think ur type-I modem has the port forwarded which u use in torrents and in type-IV modem, the port is not forwarded.

BTW which mode do u use?????PPPOE or BRIDGE??????????
Bridge mode has all ports open while in PPPOE mode we have to configure.

Check your line SNR. To do this, first you need to enter into the Modem’s web page by typing http://192.168.1.1 in your browser.

The modem might ask for user-name and password. The default user-name / password is admin / admin. Under the heading Device Info >> Statistics >> ADSL, you will be able to see the SNR Margin and Attenuation check if there is any difference in these values in both modem.

I think port forwarding could be an issue. Unfortunately, the nokia-siemens model that I have does not appear to have port forwarding feature. At least I couldn't find "advanced" tab or the "virtual server" tab as explained in the port forwarding guide available on this site. Does this particular model support port forwarding?

I'm using PPOE. I thought that PPOE is the only way to go for [modem+wifi router] things.

well then that could be the issue............

    to determine:-
    1) Go to utorrent>Options>Speed Guide.A Box will appear.

    2) Click "Test if port is forwarded properly".

    3) Ur Browser will open and a web site will open........see there it will be written properly.

reply if it is not forwarded.

You've hit it on the nail. Type-I forwards the port, whereas type-IV does not.

I have nokia-siemens model labled "residential router 1600", which I suspect is a generic name. Any way, the main thing is that I can't find any settings where I can set the port forwarding. What should I do?
