    Default BSNL is faster!!!!

    Hi all,
I have read in many places that Open DNS or any other public DNS is faster than BSNL DNS.
But I ran Name bench and it said that my current DNS(ie the BSNL DNS) is 32% faster.
To further confirm the finding I even ran DNS Benchmark and it also returned with similar findings.
Is something wrong with my router config or is really BSNL DNS faster?
    Thanks in advance.

DNS speeds depend on the geographical location of the servers as well..... So in any case, BSNL servers are faster for us..... Go for other services like Open DNS only when BSNL DNS servers are down..........

They could be faster in your case. BSNL has various DNS addresses implemented automatically at various parts of country. For west, it is different, for south its different.

Speed of DNS depends upon its health & how it is maintained on server. Generally, its observed that BSNL DNS are unreliable unlike other public DNS by third party vendors & they become quite slow sometimes or even goes down completely.

In my case, when I set DNS address automatically in connection configuration, that is default by BSNL, nameserver & DNSbench test shows that one of the two DNS by BSNL is completely dead & not responding to queries. Both the tests suggest me that google DNS are fastest.

In short, result highly varies from place to place.

BSNL DNS is faster then the other DNS. Because DNS speeds depend on the geographical location of the servers. DNS is a Domain Name System. It is used to resolved the ip address to domain name or vise versa. The time of resolved the ip address to domain name will short if the DNS is fast. This is DNS do. If you think your page is loading slowly and you think changing DNS will help to loading the page fast then you are wrong.

No! Changing the DNS may speed up the page loading time. But it has nothing to do with internet speed following that it will not increase your downloading speed.

When you type the website address, your DNS first converts the alphabetic address into numeric address associated with web server. While that process is going, you can see status of the process in browser window that 'Looking up xyz.com '. This look up time varies from DNS to DNS depending upon its health & that's where you can save the browsing time or you can say speed up the browsing.

This look up time generally varies from 2-3 seconds to as low as 0.1 second, the first one in case of worst maintained DNS & later one for fastest DNS.

    Download this tool: http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm
It will calculate .com , cached, uncached look up speed of various DNS & will suggest you fastest one.

What is your connection mode? Always on or Bridge?

For me, its working fine & both DNS bench, namebench suggest me its a fasrest. Namebenchsometimes recommends me some other DNS which is not by much known vendor, so I can't rely on that. Google just works fine.

How to do so? Is it just for 2003 server edition?

Thank you guys for such informative answer.
I have one more query to ask ie I have Home UL 750 plan that means my bandwidth is 256 and I would be able to download at 32. But if I use any download manager like DAP or IDM my download speed increases to around 35-45. How is that possible?

Yes, it increases because download managers looks for mirrors of file source & simultaneously sets multiple connections with server. Each connection works independently & thus results in accelerated speed. ADSL & cable internet allows possibly maximum bandwidth with single connection to the server. So result of such accelerators is not that much effective while using these technologies.

On the other hand, wireless internet based on EVDO, 3G like technologies restrict the use of bandwidth per single connection. For eg. 2 Mbps wireless connection usually restrict downstream bandwidth (a wrong practice by service provider ) to 50 KB/sec per connection. In such case, accelerators can set 5 simultaneous connection & can allow you full bandwidth such as 250 KB/sec in this case.

And yes, default download managers integrated in browsers have no ability to set up multiple connections.
