Looks like a good move but details are being withheld by BSNL website for unknown reasons about broadband upgrades.

I see this only in Maran-fridndly news papers like The Hindu, Express etc...but BSNL website itself is refusing talk about broadband plans on 2 Mpbs for existing customers.

If this is true as a Unlimited 256 Kpbs customer I will definitely benefit. More over, I have paid yearly subscription for which I received nearly 2 months of subscription as discount plus cheaper wireless router compared to Airtel and other providers.

If proposed plan really be implemented I will be more than just happy!

Though this is a big step in the right direction , i'm not sure how these people are going to overcome this data transfer limit which is just stupid. Now i understand that giving unlimited plans to all users is not feasible but there must be some common sense when it comes to imposing such limits.

These data limits have been the primary season why i didn't opt for mtnl 590 NU plan. 1 Gb is way too less if you surf for an average of 3 hours a day. No wonder isps like exatt are cashing in on new customers with plans like 256 kbps with a 10 GB limit and that too for 450 Rs per month.

Mtnl/Bsnl should be looking at having a cap not less than 5 GB for plans which cost 400 Rs upwards.These people assume that they are only three types of users ;
type 1 : who just chat and check email ,
type 2 : who only use the net in the night and on holidays,
type 3 : who don't have internet.

What about really heavy users and people who browse a lot and don't download much ? They simply need to come up with unlimited plans which imo will give them a real penetration. Without the unlimited plans this 2 mbps thing can be summed up in this way ,
( speed !!!) ... ( no use due to the download limit )

Very true
If these limits are still gonna be there its no use coz for browsing there will be no visible difference atall coz tim taken to load an average page will not vary that much between a 256kbps connection and a 2meg connection they will feel the same.
The only difference which will show up is the speed at which you will be able to download and thats something which is gonna drill a hole in your pocket so ts not time to celebrate yet

Are you kidding?

- Try loading a more than 10 minute YouTube video page with 256kbps and 2mbps. You'll see the "visible difference". Youtube wont even play the video without buffering on that line

- Or open 3 tabs of any photo blog/flick. You'll see how a 256kbps line will be bottleneck'd when a 2mbps will load at 100% within a few seconds.

This is apart from the using apps like Google Earth. So download speed is NOT the only thing that a 2mbps connection is worthy for.

I guess you missed the bit where I said "average page"

I have a 10mbps connection back home in UK and an 18meg connection and I dont see any noticable difference in browsing as compared to this sify 256kbps connection I am using in Delhi these days.

Yes you are correct when you say about youtube video page.

I think BSNL have scored a massive own goal here. The download limits should have been increased 5 times as opposed to the present 2.5. Secondly whoever came up with the timings for night unlimited is completely out of his mind. I find it ridiculous that mtnl/bsnl are banking on this upgradation of speed as their USP to reach out to the people when clearly more important issues have simply not been addressed.

I was so excited about this whole thing and had planned to dump my existing exatt connection for mtnl but my only option now is Airtel , subject to it's availability in our area.

Unless it was necessary i wouldn't be coming back here if i was having a 10 mbps connection.

Btw does your isp pull people up for downloading too much ? I have chat friends in the U.S who have experienced this shite.
